Dom Capers hired

I know many of us oldtimers that actually remember when Capers was here.  The Panthers had an amazing defense and though Capers was the HC and not the DC, the defense was clearly his.

Salt and Pepper, Mills and many other great names in Panther lore.

What I truly love about this hire, is who will be here when Evero gets his first HC gig?  We have the man that Mentored him.  It is like our backup DC.  When he goes don't be surprised to see him elevated to DC.  This time he won't be grabbing a HC spot but remain our DC until he retires.

Capers will be instrumental in replacing Evero should he get a HC position next season.  I get the feeling we are also building a coaching development program also. Because let's be real, if you build a successful team you are going to lose coaches. Your team better be able to find and develop good assistant coaches for the future along the way.

Agreed, IF Evero was hired as a HC.  Capers could move to DC or he could as you say stay as an assistant.    If Capers were to be promoted to DC the chances of him jumping to a HC position is highly unlikely.  He could end up as our DC for several years and continue to develop his tree.

He doesn't want to be a DC at this stage in his career. He's just an advisor at this point.  He just helps identify talent for the defensive staff and help teach them.

Panthers hired Dom Capers as a senior defensive assistant.

The move marks the third consecutive year with the same role for different teams after Capers previously served as senior defensive assistant in both Detroit and Denver. Frank Reich wasted no time in making significant coaching moves after being hired as the new head coach in Carolina, also hiring Josh McCown to serve as the team's new quarterbacks coach. Capers, now 72, brings substantial coaching experience to an organization with numerous moving parts this offseason

This. This. This.

Reich being able to develop quality NFL coaches will be a tremendous blessing. Continually developing quality coordinators that can handle their jobs with the X's & O's and having position coaches that are proven teachers is something that this team has sorely missed.

Please welcome Steve Smith the new wide receivers coach of the Carolina Panthers.

He was on Rome the other day and the possibility was brought up, with the Panthers changing over from the previous coaches. Smith said he knows very well what his limitations are, and he does not think of himself as a leader of men. He went on to say that he had coached 1 of his kids flag football team, and even that was pushing the limit. He's probably right in that he doesn't have the patience for it.

    • It's amazing how much yall can say the same things over and over and not annoy yourselves with it.
    • If you only look at measurables, Mingo and Legette might seem similar.  But when you actually look at them and watch them play, they aren't close to the same.   And this is coming from someone who is skeptical about Legette, although ultimately I believe he will work out.  I've just always disagreed with the comparisons to Mingo.   Mingo tests better than he plays/runs, whereas Legette plays/runs as well as he tests.
    • As bad as things were with the Panthers last year, we still had 4 other games outside of the 2 we won that we came very close to winning.  Could throw the Falcons game in there too, it was tied going into the 4th. I'm not really sure what to expect this year.  I don't think we'll make the playoffs.  However, we play in a very weak division where no team has a standout QB.  On paper, our OL should be good, and could be great if Ikem improves.  That alone could help mask a lot of problems on offense.  Should allow us to run the ball better.  Even if Bryce doesn't improve, the OL should at the very least give him more time to make the easy throws underneath and let a guy like Legette work his magic after the catch. And I think this defense in a 2nd year with Evero should, at the very least, be in the top 16.  I'm expecting our run defense to be as good as it has been in years. I think this team could push for 7-8 wins.  But it could also finish with 2 wins again.  That is just how the league works.  Jets offense was miserable last year, and yet they still won 7 games.   We won't really get a good feel of it until after the preseason, and even then, who knows.
