Hall of Famer Bill Parcells on Bryce Young's Size: 'He Better Walk on Water'

Recommended Posts

Pro Football Hall of Famer Bill Parcells thinks Bryce Young's talent has to be special to succeed in the NFL to overcome his lack of size.

Speaking to The Athletic's Dan Pompei, Parcells said Young "better walk on water" at the next level. Pompei noted Parcells was referencing a saying from former Green Bay Packers general manager Ron Wolf about bringing in undersized players.

Parcells did acknowledge there have been undersized quarterbacks who have succeeded in the NFL, but it's a small percentage relative to the number of players at the position:

"I realize there have been a couple of good short quarterbacks, but most of the guys doing these jobs are not 5-10. So if you draft people that look like the people that are already doing these jobs, your percentage (of hitting on them) is greater than if you draft someone who doesn't look like them.

Per ESPN's Jeff Legwold, Kyler Murray is the shortest first-round quarterback since 1967 and tied with Johnny Manziel for the lightest. The Arizona Cardinals signal-caller measured in at the same height as Young and three pounds heavier (207) in 2019.

One AFC front-office executive told Dan Pompei of The Athletic that Young's weight was "manufactured" for the event.

"His weight was manufactured for the combine, then his agents didn't allow him to get weighed at his pro day," the anonymous executive said. "He's a 185- to 190-pound guy frame-wise."

Parcells has a good grasp on what it's like to have success in the NFL it's a lot of uncertainty leading up to the draft. The safe bet or gamble on the outlier, time will tell..Only 6 more days to go..

Thanks for sharing. Could you articulate to us why Stroud is the safe bet or best QB prospect in this draft?

There isn't a throw he can't make..deadly accurate. Strong poise in the pocket, while not the runner cam was does have some escapability..also Reich stated in his presser he was looking for a qb who can throw from the pocket which is hard to do when your vision is obstructed. You have to be able to stand strong in the pocket and throw darts everything isn't going to be an out of the pocket throw, Russell Wilson did that for years in Seattle and look at him now..

LG hasa good read on this, different era and QB have flags now.

Flag won't save him if this man hits him it'll only get you a few yards but your qb will be broken. Which is why you need someone to stand tall get the ball out quick and not run around like a chicken with his head cut off..won't work in the pros guys are too fast
