I wanted Richardson but I had them Richardson, Stroud, Young. But I said at the time that I could be swayed hard by their interviews. I just had extremely serious concerns about Bryce's physical tools.

By the time i finished my personal evaluations, i had it.

Stroud

Richardson

Young

Levis

I was the most unimpressed with Youngs tape but gave him the nod over Levis because of accomplishments. Thats it really.

2nd round pick. Imagine if Jimmy played one more season and the Panthers took him first overall, and Cam went 2nd overall. Thats how bad this is. Its unironically one of the worst draft decisions in NFL history.

You're right. I completely forgot Jimmy was a 2nd round pick.

If Stroud ends up being great and Bryce busts, yeah... this pick and trade up will be a part of sports cautionary tale banter for a loooooooong time.

Not really. It sets you back two years. And what difference does it make if Tepper’s still making the hires and the draft picks? None.

Be honest. Right now Bryce looks like a future sports trivia question answer.

"Who was the QB drafted #1 overall over CJ Stroud after the Panthers traded two 1sts, two 2nds, and DJ Moore to get the pick?"

*everyone nervously chuckles and groans and shakes their head feeling the weight of the cringe*

Will we 'Josh Rosen'' Bryce?  Tepper will clean house before he owns up to this epic blunder even if Bryce ends up being as bad as Rosen.  Rosen was averaging just under a TD a game he started while averaging a pick per game.  He went into a tailspin and was playing worse by the end of his rookie season, not better.  Keeping rookie QBs out there--so they can grow through adversity, can be detrimental rather than beneficial.

Bryce is right there, just slightly better than Rosen, with roughly a TD and pick per game average.

No team in NFL history has traded next year’s first round pick and had that turn out to be the number one pick

Our moron front office hoped he had Tom Brady IQ/awareness. Unfortunately Bryce has jamarcus Russell IQ/awareness without the athleticism of jamarcus. Just a god awful draft pick

His physical limitations notwithstanding, there is reason for optimism. Before yesterday, he had a 90% QBR which is not bad for a rookie. No matter how high your IQ, accuracy or athleticism, you’re not doing diddly-squat if your OL can’t block or run block consistently or WRs can’t get open.

Not saying Young will be a future HOF, but neither Stroud (the one I wanted) and Richardson would look like much with this roster as currently constructed offense- wise.

I told everyone before the draft that his arm was NFL average at best and that it was my opinion he had a below average NFL arm. But his arm is significantly worse than I thought. When he doesn't have plenty of runway to step up he can't generate any velocity at all.

And this has been shouted from the rooftops by some. Since his Pro Day in my case. Took very little squinting to see the light.

Kind of like our society, it is definitely a parallel. People are in a place where just saying something seems to make it true for them. Reality be damned.

It isn’t that he can’t make some plays and some throws and probably win some games.

It IS that you do not ever even consider doing what was done to get him on the Panthers. You don’t under any circumstances. My rule prior, for sure my rule post.

    • So the last guy who had the job got hired by his former team directly into a role he has no direct experience in?
    • Hard to pass up millions for a couple of days work per week for a coaching gig in the NFL that is 60-80 hours each week during the season and a more relaxed 50 hours a week during the off season. Yeah, I'd love to see him as our DC but hard to see him giving up the cushy job there if he gets it. And he's going to be a great commentator for the network.
    • Really, I think that is where negotiations come in. If you've got a QB getting you to 10 wins but statistically he's not a great performer, then you say look you can take $22 million or you can try it on the market. Because let's face it, out there, any leadership skills that we're seeing aren't going to be on the table, it's just going to be performance and that lands him in the QB2 market, which is much, much less lucrative (although any of us would love that money).  No one is saying that Bryce will be a $50 million QB, barring something short of a miraculous jump. I'm just saying that if we are winning somehow with him at the helm, then it would be fuging stupid to dive back into the rookie pool all over again. Let's say we do hit the 10 win mark, heck, let's call it 11 and a second round in the playoffs. I think we can all say that would be a really uplifting result and one that should be doable if we have good play. What do we do then? Here's what I would offer if I were Morgan and Tepper. $25 million a year for 3 years, each year with up to $10 million in incentives for touchdowns, wins, playoff depth, being under 10 interceptions, completing a full season, passing yardage milestones, taking less than 15 sacks. Look, Bryce isn't a Ferrari, he isn't a Corvette, or a mid-level BMW. He's probably a new Toyota Sienna that will definitely get you somewhere and bring the whole team along with it, no fuss but not a lot of pizazz.  And really, it's about the destination, not about what drove you there.
