Bryce Backers

I’m still going to back him because he is the QB of my home team but he has been struggling and has not shown any of the attributes our talent evaluators raved about. If he succeeds it will be a miracle. He will have to overcome a bad owner, poor talent evaluators, the nfl that sees teams like the panthers as punching bags and the referees.  So, if the panthers can overcome that then Santa is real despite what I heard.

yes or no

do you think Young is a franchise qb worthy of the #1 pick?

He is not worthy of the #1 pick. I’ve been consistent with this. We gave up way too much for a gamble like him. IF we were insisting on moving those assets Stroud was the safe pick.
I just think our whole roster is awful right now. We need to build it up and roll with Young in 2024. If he doesn’t look better then reset in 25 with a new QB.

I take issue with people who find pleasure when we don't do well. I think it's too early to call Young a bust and that INFURIATES some people. There is a certain group here that only crawl out of the woodwork to troll and poo post when things go wrong.

I get that, but the majority of us think he's a bust. That's rare. Usually the debate is equally divided. But when this many of us think he's not going to make it, I think the tone of gameday threads is fine. If he'd shown an ounce of fight in every game, then yeah ... go away, trolls. But he really hasn't. And by fight, I mean the capability to overcome the odds he's be given. YES ... he has insane odds on his back. But he's shown next to nothing all season long. The "hate" is warranted. I don't see you defending Sanders, who was elite as fug in Philly. So why defend Bryce so strongly? Everyone is getting their fair share of "hate" on this team. Just because he's a rookie, a #1 pick, a former college superstar, and a nice guy shouldn't shield him from unhappy fans.

A few good throws / quarters can give us some hope but it doesn't erase the overwhelming majority of the time he plays where he looks like garbage.  He'll get some time next year but man... Really looks like a bust, and I would be astonished if he ever ended up better than an average starter for any team in the future, as that would already be a HUGE leap.

Too many stats. We suck

No, Bryce sucks. He is the worst (primary) starting QB in the NFL by a country mile. There is no debate. In fact, he is likely worse than most backups out there, not to mention a few undrafted rookie free agents.

Bryce is historically bad. He stinks, and he makes our OL look worse than it really is.

Agreed. Bryce is the sweaty salt on David Teppers balls.

To be successful, Bryce NEEDS a perfect roster around him and for him to play game manager.  We are YEARS away from being a complete team, so why hang onto a QB who can't flourish in less than an ideal scenario?

The fact of the matter is that Bryce was on an elite college team with superstars all around him. That's why he was great at Alabama. Here, no ... he has zero superstars. But here's the thing, every single year Alabama gets a new crop of superstars. That doesn't happen in the NFL. So if Young needs a fantasy team in order to be elite here ... he's a bust. But if he can patch together steallr drives and big plays with mediocre talent ... he's a true NFL QB. And when true QBs get that golden span (usually 2-5 years) of better than avg players on their team? That's when they win it all. We've had that happen twice but lost of course. This current franchise is years and years from being a team good enough for a stud QB to lead, and right now we have zero proof Young is even a stud.

RE: Lawrence talk — I would hesitate to compare because Trevor is still having a pretty iffy/up and down career. He still doesn’t look like he’s jumping into top-10 QB conversation.

RE: Bryce — I just don’t know at this point. The eye test still just seems really bad. I would love to say he’s getting me excited at times, I’m trying to stay neutral, but it’s been difficult. No getting around that for me, it sucks to say, but it’s just what I see. Just seems way too limited.

Time to position Bryce for next season and see how he can look in a new environment with a revised offense. Not much more to thinK on in that respect. We’ve known what we’re getting with the combo we have on offense for 10+ weeks running.

    • We’re in a pickle. My best hope is we protect him and can run the ball vs most Ds and the WRs are healthy so he has every chance to not look like what he looked like in too many games last year.
    • I'm really not stressing about upgrading from Bryce. I'm frustrated with our inability (or refusal) to recognize overall bad QB performance and failure to seriously address the issue. QB is the most impactful position on the field, and we're not only settling for what we've been given to this point, but we've rewarded it with a fully guaranteed 5th year extension for a player that's never played 2 NFL franchise QB quality games back to back in 3 seasons. I can't understand how that's ok from a coach's or GM's viewpoint. Successful franchises don't do things like this. It just doesn't make sense.  We do not have a top half of the league QB right now. Since we don't have that player, we should be looking for him. Pickett isn't it. Grier isn't it. Bryce hasn't proven he is yet. Until you have that sure fire franchise QB, you keep looking. You're not consistently making the playoffs, a deep run, or a SB appearance without one.  What's the worst that could happen? We end up with 2 potential number 1 QBs? How horrible.
    • Easy to understand Pickett, if this is anywhere close to on point. Canales wants to get as close to Bryce as he can- get the pace and timing in the throws as close a he can to Bryce. So the other players don’t have to adjust so much, to a new guy.       If Cam was the 1, he would look for a rocket arm.  But Bryce is the 1. Look for limited in the same way.  Low velocity, plenty of air under it, feels just like home when Picket comes in. And you have the guys on the second team not having such a radical adjustment (if they have to play) like with Dalton to Bryce.    Enter Grier. I guess we will collect those types.
