I will make this prediction, our new GM will set a new bar for the organization.

He will be worse than Scott Fitterer.

That’s such a low bar to clear. I mean Scott had no working football knowledge. If the new GM even looks at a fans mock draft and uses that he’d do way better than SF ever did.

Excluding Ben Johnson...pecking order could be something like this:

1. Mike Macdonald

2. Bobby Slowik

3. Dave Canales

4. Promote Ejiro Evero

5A/B. Brian Callahan/Frank Smith (Don't know enough about and they don't call plays/unsure about them)

From what I have read about MM over the weekend he just seems like the dude.  Almost like a cant miss type candidate.

I think slowik needs more seasoning

canales is probably who we end up with

I just don't think there's enough info out there to have confidence in Slowik.

I want us to hire "consistently good", not "small sample good".

But considering all these openings we might have to accept our best option could be rolling the dice on someone a little bit.

I have said before but I would not be surprised if Slowik returns to the Texans for one more season.
Especially if the Texans somehow make it to the AFC Championship.

I've seen it reported that DeMeco has essentially told Slowik he should come back for another year. Here's him telling the media something to that effect.

That Texans team bloomed so quickly w/a young coordinator in Slowik with a young HC Ryans, it may feel very exciting for them to build a new powerhouse there.  Can see the energy around staying and building a perennial SB contender with Stroud, Anderson, & company.

That's a legacy (+more) type play to stay.

I get that logic, but we've seen a lot of younger offensive coaches get HC jobs that "weren't ready" in the eyes of many who have become great head coaches.

Sean McVay, Mike McDaniel, Zac Taylor, Matt LeFleur and Kevin O'Connell just to name a few. If anything it's been the older/more experienced coaching hires that have struggled in recent years.

    • Yeah they were bad QBs - but QB's that stayed on their teams for several years.  BY is better than all of those.
    • This is the right move even if you think Bryce isn't the future. Everything except signing him to a long term deal until proven otherwise. There's a decent chance we have a shot to draft a QB next year that we like.
    • If we're still bad enough that Canales gets fired, especially if it's during the season, there is no way we could ever attract any HC worthy of the job if we told them they had to keep Bryce their first year. That would be 2 coaches he's gotten fired and 4 years of not performing up to par. I still say replace both of them next offseason.  I like Canales the man and I think he's done an absolutely outstanding job at fixing our locker room issues, as it was really bad before he showed up.  But I just don't see it from him with his in game decision making, I think he's held us back just as much as Bryce has, just in different ways. Canales was our Dan Campbell, the coach you hire to turn the franchises culture around for the HC after them to inherit and take to the next level.   The difference was he had some elite coordinators early on and really let him focus on his "leader of men" role as opposed to the X's and O's that Canales does himself and it's turned out well for him.
