Is this the worst GM/Coach combo in Panthers history?

In the draft where we had 11 picks, we got Horn, Christensen, Hubbard and Tremble, all still with the team and all made contributions last year except Christensen (who even despite that might be the best pick of that class). Others like Shi Smith put in some work as well (still surprised he didn't stay given he would have been perfect for a West Coast type attack).

As to how you draft badly, making it a collaborative effort helps a lot. In that draft we got Terrace Marshall because Joe Brady lobbied for him, Thomas Fletcher thanks to Rhule and others. Likewise, we later took Matt Corral because of Ben Mcadoo, DJ Johnson because Ejiro Evero wanted him, Kalin Barnes again from Rhule, and so on.

Fitterer's biggest failure was rooted in taking a too collaborative approach with everyone rather than just making the picks straight from the draft board the scouting staff put together.

Mind you, the one big "flipside" argument could be Stroud vs Young, depending on what you believe.

I'm clearly being a bit facetious here.

One of the biggest problems with this forum and certain members is that everyone wants to take everything so literal.

Some "connected" journalist states that Rhule had final say and then next thing you know everything was his fault and nothing was Fitt's fault.  That isn't how these things work.  I doubt Rhule is doing all of the day to day scouting himself and putting the board together by himself.

What is more likely is that Fitt and his department does the scouting and puts together the board and then on draft day Rhule does have final say.  It's totally possible that Rhule did throw out Purdy's name at some point in the process and its totally possible they decided not to have him on the draft board.

It's pretty clear he didn't like him enough to push that hard for him, because if he would have had the much conviction, I'm sure he could have made it happen.  

I'm not absolving Rhule in all of these draft day decisions, there is enough blame to go around for everyone.  My only point is the truth is usually somewhere towards the middle.

As fans we always want to know who to blame, but it's not always that black and white.  Even if the HC makes the decision he is picking from a list that the GM put together.  It's not like the GM is offering up choices that he thinks is bad.

Defending and carrying water for Fitterer is easily just as dumb but good luck anyway.

I mean... What proof of this is there exactly? Because a coach wanted a dude? That doesn't mean that the scouts / Fitterer didn't.

It was initially reported at the time of the draft picks themselves, but not in a negative way. It wasn't considered a defense, just a way of explaining how they worked.

Since Fitterer was fired, three or four different analysts have looked back on it and seen it as an issue.

And for the record, it's not a defense now either. Working that way was his decision. It basically worked out to drafting by committee (which is objectively a terrible idea).

      Lol. He may not be the prototype LT but he is solid. Your takes are embarrassing. IDGAF about anything in the NCAA but prospects. Still pining for Datnold is freaking hilarious. Ickey's weakness is passprotect from speed. He is smart and has room to improve a bit in his weakness but he is a beast in the run game. That's worth more than your willing to admit. I would still take him over everything since Gross so just GTFO of here with that weak and sad take.

      First, let me say that some people aren't going to like this. Not because they don't enjoy reading a tongue-in-cheek article based on hints of truth, but because at times, this seems like a more mean-spirited version.  It also has an error regarding Tetairoa McMillan's 40 time at the NFL Combine, and the writer also somehow thinks that throwing in a standalone sentence that references Dave Canales and his past struggle with porn addiction is funny. Deadspin went through it's trials and tribulations, and many key people started and went to Defector. Defector is supposed to be an improvement, but I don't know that it is based upon this...satire? The following are snippets. On the team in general: If it still seems impossible to you that this team won five games, well, you're onto something. That mildly respectable 4-5 finish to the season only looks worse the longer you stare at it: They eked out back-to-back wins against the putrid Saints and Giants by a combined four points, and then needed overtime and a heroic Chuba Hubbard performance to beat the Cardinals. The final win of the season, Week 18's 44-38 overtime victory against a Falcons team that was trying to make the playoffs, can be counted as legitimately impressive for as long as it takes you to remember that the Falcons will always be frauds. On Dave Canales:  "Canales, meanwhile, has an alarming amount of swagger for a guy who was a few fluky late-season wins away from presiding over the worst team in the league. "The sky's the limit for this group," Canales said at the start of training camp. "This is going to be a very competitive team. I don't think people are going to want to play us by the style of football that we play. I'm expecting that." OK pal, take it easy." "The story those quotes come from is a fun read, due to how hard it strains to recast a season that was 90 percent disaster as some kind of meaningful step forward. Benching Young after Week 2, an obvious panic move that was almost certainly undertaken at Tepper's direction, is retrofitted to be "a gutsy move that defines Canales." Who needs winning seasons or division titles when you can put "Benched my QB in Week 2 and then put him back in the lineup because the other guy got injured" under the Gutsy Moves That Define Me section of a résumé. This man will have a job for life. I'm expecting that." On Bryce: "Young is entering his third season as the Panthers' starting quarterback, which is about the time you expect a guy who was drafted No. 1 overall to start demonstrating that he's capable of being the franchise savior he was selected to be. Tepper is an argument against the idea that familiarity breeds contempt; sometimes all you need is one look at a guy before deciding that you'd like to punch him in the face."   There's some truth here, and I'm sure that to the Negative Nancys the portrayal is spot on, but remember that this is ostensibly coming from a satirical perspective. The "truth" hurts though, and hopefully, like every season, there's still plenty of hope and optimism. At the end of the day, we just don't know how the m infusion of acquisitions and young players is going to work out.
