The Panthers and wide receiver/punt returner Ihmir Smith-Marsette may be parting ways.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports that the Panthers are not expected to tender Smith-Marsette a contract as a restricted free agent. Fowler adds that the two sides could still agree on a contract, but Smith-Marsette is currently set to hit the open market.

Smith-Marsette joined the Panthers in a preseason trade with the Chiefs last summer. He averaged 8.7 yards per punt return and had a 79-yard touchdown return in a Week 10 loss to the Bears.

Smith-Marsette, who entered the league as a 2021 Vikings fifth-round pick, also caught eight passes for 51 yards and ran eight times for 74 yards last season

He's not bad, but really, I can understand him not being tendered. If he can get good money elsewhere, then the team is smart to let him go. It's more cost effective to roll the dice at this point.

I did think he could add something in our passing game, but man, there are a lot of dead-weight guys in front of him with actual contracts. There's going to have to be an axe taken to that group before he's got a shot at getting in there.

But... if he's still out there getting offers at vet minimum or a bit more, then expect the Panthers to make a move to retain him, matching those offers but not much more than that.

    • Ultimately it's up to the other safety prospects to clearly outplay Scott. I think when that happens on tape against other teams it'll be addressed. I think none of them have done that definitively and consistently yet.
    • Night and day difference in the front office investements.  Since Morgan has been in the FO (5 years)....4 out of 5 first round picks have been offensive players.  The one defensive pick was a corner. Expand it out to the first 2 rounds? 7 out of the 9 picks have been offensive.  That IMO is why our D sucks so bad.   You build defenses up front.   Carolina hasn't been investing there.  Ron's first 5 years? 3 of the 5 first round picks were defensive players.  Expand it all to include second rounders  7 of the 10 picks were defensive.  All front 7 players.
    • I think he gets this year to show what he can do.  Last year, we had a lot of injuries. This year, we should have some players, even if we lose one or two.  It's the first preseason game.  Some of the starters weren't even in it.  There is no scheming or game planning.  Let's see how guys do when it counts. I think we have a GM that knows a thing or two about defense.  Let it play out.
