And sitting around lamenting on it changes things how? The situation with take care of itself. Either he will or he won't.  End of story.  Now can we focus on the rest of the team? You know they are just as important right? We've spent the last 8 seasons worrying about just the qb position while the rest of the team dried up and went to crap. How did that work out? How about we try to fix what we can and let the rest work it's way to the forefront to be addressed next offseason.  This team is not winning much this season unless Canales and his crew turn out to be the next McVay or something.

You're not wrong. The desire to get a QB has been in the FO for years, but they've been idiots about it. Every single attempt failed.  Fitts gutted the rest of the team for nothing

That's the reality no one wants to accept. The painful truth is that if this team hopes to have any sustained success they will have to build the team through the draft. It will take them getting they right players over several offseasons to get this team anywhere near where they want to be. That's even if they can be successful in the draft. Then you have to know if the coaching staff are creative enough and can develop these players well enough to win a few games along the way. It's hard for me to see it going down any other way.

This is a 5-win team max. It's not Morgan's fault though

from 2 to 5 wins is a solid improvement.  I've been saying if we can get 6 wins it will be a highly successful season.  If Bryce looks much better that would just be gravy on the top.

No way, after seeing Canales hug his players, we're going to win the Superb Owl!!!

Jokes aside, I like him doing that to start to build rapport with the team.

We were abysmal last year.  Our D was the bright spot, but even it had some real issues outside of being on the field for most of the game.  We traded away our best edge, lost our best LB, and cut a starting safety.  Yikes.  Our offense, the big brown streak in the underwear of fandom, was just the worst.  Couldn't get out of their way.  When the rare big play happened, something happened immediately after or during to ruin it.  We were worse at scoring than the D&D Club in an 80s RomCom.

I like how we're getting big men in the middle.  I like how Canales seems to have a vision.  I like that they are trying to get Evero some players.

If we somehow manage to double or triple our win total from last year, it's going to be a good year.  Even with that, we need to see Bryce Young develop and show why he was the consensus #1 NFL Draft Pick.

Let's see development.  Let's see smart plays and game plans.  Since this is the NFL, I would not be surprised if our games in November and December have some meaning for us.

I tend to agree.  There's just too many issues to address in one offseason to expect anything better than that.

Yeah, the only thing I'm really paying attention to is Bryce's development this coming year. Eeking out wins despite of him doesn't excite me. If he doesn't show traits of a franchise QB, move on.

I mean, five wins doesn't mean that we didn't have a good off-season. It's all relative.

I'm paying attention to what Bryce does for sure, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to be looking at the team as a whole. Bryce is the captain of the ship for now, so we kinda have to focus on what he does or doesn't do, while simultaneously trying to compartmentalize and grade what the other players are doing as well. I think that's pretty much true every year, because teams need QBs at best to lift the team on their shoulders and win, or at worst not to be the reason the team doesn't win. That being said, you still have to build a team, irrespective of the QB. I feel that the Rams showed that building a team that a franchise QB can be dropped into and immediately win is possible, and I feel that San Fran has followed that same model, the Jets are trying to do the same, and that the Bears are doing something similar as well.

We're so new and not yet established that it's going to take some time to construct and cement a culture. Within that same vein, I don't think there's one way to go about winning championships, but I do believe that the FOs that do it best have the finger on the pulse of its personnel at all times and develops a dynamic plan in order to put pieces together that will make winning championships more possible on a consistent basis.

I'm kinda rambling now, but suffice it to say that all the pieces of the team are important, but some pieces are more important than others. You have to be able to project what the team can and can't do based upon the pieces that you do and don't have, and you must be able to see where some are limiting the team towards its goal, and others are pulling the team closer to its goal.

There are certainly things to like. If Canales is indeed the right hire at the right time that will go a long way in restoring the competitiveness at minimum.

But. We also have to be able to draft worth a damn. That's the variable we're on pins and needles waiting to see how it plays out. Morgan needs to HIT in this draft or the coach doesn't matter.

I'll be ready to pop the champagne in the fall after I've seen enough results to feel comfortable.

I agree about the importance of some positions over others. But you can only fix so many issues in one offseason.

Due to the blunders made in the past we are stuck with what we have, for now. What was done is done and now we deal with it. QB will not be addressed this offseason. That will be addressed next year. I would venture to guess that WR will not be fully addressed this offseason as well. An attempt will be made to replace a few already on the roster but results may vary. Everything will depend on whose bpa when we pick. The other positions we will just have to see how it goes.

The only thing that matters this season is Bryce.

They need to put enough around him so that we can get a definitive answer to whether he’s a franchise QB or not.

This doesn’t need to drag into 2025

I’m kind of wanting us to just build a complete roster. If Bryce sucks still we can replace him, but let’s give whoever is QB something to work with.

Sounds like you've already made up your mind about Bryce...

Yeah it’s been a good offseason in terms of starting to build a competent roster for either Bryce or whichever QB we draft next year

Not really. I'm just not going to dwell on it. My hope is that he will work out of course because it's better for everyone in the long run. But I'm not losing sleep over it if he doesn't. I couldn't care less that he was the 1st overall pick or that he must live up to that status according to some fans beliefs. I've seen this movie too many times to think that is what really matters. In the end it's a team game and 1 player does not make a team, even if it's a qb. That's what's gotten us in the shape we are now,  thinking they were a qb away. Nothing could have been further from the truth. They wasted so much draft capital chasing the one that they forgot to build up everything else.

    • That's fine but for every Kurt Warner there are 10 Tony Banks that don't find their spot because....it never really existed.  Jake Browning was on and off practice squad teams for years until he stuck in Cincy. In his limited action over the past two seasons, he has played well enough that the Bengals panic traded for 41 year old Joe Flacco. It's easy to point to outliers like Warner or Purdy or Tom Brady as players who fell through the cracks because....well, they are outliers. The statistics over the long term have never really borne out the argument that every QB is just waiting for their perfect spot and situation. Most of these guys bounce around the league and it just never really clicks anywhere or they become marginal backup QB's. I don't think that exactly an accident. It's tough to be a starting NFL QB and it's why the hunt every offseason is so frantic. There are just so few that do it at a high level. My guess is that a theoretical market for Bryce Young(today) is going to look a lot like that post Chicago Justin Fields market. Not a lot of interest and a late round pick value at the highest. And a lot of that IS going to be his average to below average physical traits. It's extremely tough to be in that range and excel in the NFL. And it's precisely because you DO have to be closer to perfection to make up for the fact that you can't do a lot of the things that the elite to above average starters in this league do.
    • Im never not impressed by how confidently wrong you are. I've watched probably 200 NFL QBs play live. This talk about Bryce's arm strength is retarded, pure and simple. Bryce can make every throw an NFL QB needs to make in any circumstance. Does he have an arm that makes you go wow all the time? No, but very few QBs truly do. Bryce has plenty of zip on the ball when he wants. That TD to XL was a frozen rope. He throws to the opposite hash and outside all the time with no problem. Bryce's arm is objectively stronger than Cam's post-injury. I've seen both live multiple times and I know. And Cam could still play QB well without his rocket launcher. OPs point remains. QB success relies on a lot of nebulous things. Obviously you dont like Bryce. But his success is not going to be bc he doesn't have the arm strength. Its embarrassing this is a thing. Go to some games and actually educate yourself.
    • I personally think Bryce is going to be an extremely good Quarterback for a long time. If you look at modern QB development, it just takes a while. The extreme athletes can get by early, but if you look at the trajectories of guys the last 10 years, were seeing a lot of slow-cooking. Jared Goff, Geno Smith, Baker, Sam Darnold, Trevor Lawrence. The list is long.  The guys that were truly special from Day 1 is an extremely short list. The list of things that college quarterbacks are responsible for gets shorter by the day with the transfer portal, and the college offenses. The list of things that NFL Quarterbacks are responsible for seems to get longer and longer each season.  I saw an interview the other day in which a rookie quarterback and center were calling plays for the offense.  I can't remember the team or the Quarterback, but I definitely remember the clip. It takes time, even for the smartest and most gifted, and the reality is, we have no idea how good or bad the coaching may be until we hear things we aren't supposed to hear anyway.  Bryce isn't perfect, but I saw in another thread, his biggest struggle is risk/reward. That is something I only expect him to improve upon. His adjustments, ability to read a defense, and execution have been extremely good considering our rosters in his tenure here. Our offensive personnel and coaching were both so poor his rookie year that I'm not sure it's fair to properly evaluate that at all. Since that time, all we've seen from him is growth and progress.
