Panthers Select Xavier Legette WR - Pick 32, Round 1

He's a player that needs development on his route running.  But he can contribute immediately as well.

He is already the best receiver at WR screens, reverse, slant.   He is already the best KR.

He needs polishing on the rest.

Maybe. The whole 'wait till they get on the field' attitude goes both ways. Dude did zilch as a receiver for 80% of his college career and Bryce is a big question mark. Lot of moving parts in this scenario and just as much to be skeptical about as not.

This has been a huge issue for us. We've had guys flash some potential but it seems like everyone we draft is as good as they're ever gonna be on the day we draft them. From that point on they either plateau or regress.

Just like with Rhule and Reich, my measure of success this year is steady improvement throughout (Rhule and Reich both failed). Don't care about wins and losses - does the team and individual players look better week after week? That is the indicator that this staff has potential.

How often do these extremely raw route runners coming out of college work out?

It can happen, but it doesn't seem to very often. At least not to the level of performance that one expects from a 1st rounder.

Anecdotal but two of the best WRs in the league currently.   AJ Brown and DK Metcalf.

And our HC/OC were DK's position coaches that developed him.

NFL.com gives the pick a C

Grade
C

Carolina Panthers

Draft pick

Analysis: The Panthers were looking to land their franchise quarterback by trading up to the No. 1 spot last year. Unfortunately, their poor 2023 season led to the Bears getting the No. 1 overall pick in that deal. I give former GM Scott Fitterer and Panthers owner David Tepper credit for being aggressive in looking to make a splash. In hindsight, many will say they picked the wrong guy first overall, but it’s too early to tell and we don’t know how the two quarterbacks would have performed had they switched places. They moved up one spot on Thursday, giving up very little value in swapping Day 3 picks for a chance to select Legette. His size/speed combination is impressive, but he was a one-year full-time starter for South Carolina and there will be comparisons with other pass catchers who were available, including Adonai Mitchell and Ladd McConkey, as their careers unfold.

Hahaha hahaha the bills called us.   Holy poo this is too comical. If you don't see the mark at the table.........

I don't know.  I feel the Bills kind of played themselves.  They gave the Chiefs the player they wanted and then moved down a pick to get what?  An extra 5th?  Why not just take your guy there?

They're losing the arms race to KC

Oof. WR is one of their biggest needs too. Watch them take a WR with #33.

If it plays out like that, then you know that they know that we're just suckers. Take some draft capital from us, watch us take the wrong receiver, then  take the receiver of their choice at #33.
