This. Joint practices feel like they carry with them, a loss of a major contributor to the team each time they happen.

If teams want joint practices, why not just bring back a 4th or even a 5th preseason game? At least get some revenue from it.

Yeah, that's my concern, Teppers revenue stream.

As a coach, you can control the situation completely in joint practices. You can’t in preseason games. 
 

Fan demand for preseason games is quite low. I don’t envy season ticket holders having to pay for home preseason games.

The first game really is still preseason.

edit: level of play wise- I know it counts in the standings.

'18 and '19 preseasons we looked good, granted both those seasons were derailed largely due to Cam not being healthy but still.

The sky was falling about the offense and Zod was leading the mob against the team in the 2015 preseason. Then we had 15 wins and the #1 offense.
