With the first pick, don't draft a QB? Draft a DE? C'mon!

Don't get suckered into highlight videos with wide open WRs.  Young was hitting open targets at Bama too. I think I saw one tight window throw for a TD and that was inside the 10 yard line...so short.

Ward is hands down the best QB in this class.  That said, he's not close to a generational QB.

When did the last generational QB win a ring Peyton Manning? But I don’t really want to take a QB high this year

You don't follow the draft do you?  For every Daniels and Stroud there are 10 busts. Hell, you don't have to look no further than our team.  This is NOT a good QB class.  I'm BPA, unless it's a QB.  Free agency is he way to go and wait until '26 when the QB class will be much better.

Who in 26 are you liking. Nico isn’t living up to expectations so far, Manning can’t beat out Ewers… I’m sure they will look better in another year but we would need the top pick again to land one and we should never trade up again.

Every year..... next years class is supposed to be much better until that year actually gets here. Remember the stroud/bryce class was supposed to be that much better class

Except I've been right on this.  Personally, I wanted to skip that class for this '24 class. I even said 6 QBs would be taken in the first round and nobody believed me.  A good QB crop hits every other draft or two. It's not an every year proposal.  The QB position is to tough to play to churn out great classes year after year, like say, CB.  Heck, remember the Kenny Pickett draft?  Yeah...so it's even possible to have a draft where ZERO QBs are deserving to be drafted in the first round.  We all know Pickett would not have been taken by the Steelers at #19 if he wasn't the hometown hero.

You’d want to get the most out of him and that would be playing him both ways. And the best way to do that is mainly CB and rotate him in at WR but I’d much rather trade down

I wouldn’t play him on both modes much at all. You could easily do the reverse though. Line him up in the secondary on obvious passing downs. It’s just asking for an injury though. Let him score TDs and play a premium position.

I'd say trade down but my confidence in Dan Morgan to negotiate a good deal is worse than zero.

Exactly why I don’t want this team trading down. We have become notorious for wheeling and dealing in the draft, mainly trading down. We have seen nothing come from that, and have missed out on good players.

Take the dime; we have too many nickels and Penny’s on this team

I really like Nico. Yeah, he's fallen off of late after a pretty hot start.  Manning can beat out Ewers.  Ewers is a RSR and "senior" to Manning and Arch isn't forcing the issue.  Arch could easily have transferred and started just about anywhere, but he chose to wait knowing Ewers is gone after this year.  There's several other juniors that will likely come back too that are promising, but aren't quite there yet.

Right now I rank the QBs: Ward, Ewers and Sanders.  I wouldn't even entertain the idea of taking another QB in the first round.  That said, all 3 have their issues, Ward being the most complete.  I view him as mid-tier QB in the pros.  The other two are boom or bust prospects in the pros.  Well, not so much boom as middling or bust.

It's been a while if you are talking #1 overall.  The reason for that is teams picking #1 are generally VERY BAD.  Take this team for instance.  They have to spend the majority of the poor guys rookie contract to build the rest of the team around him.  By that time, the guy is wrecked mentally, injured or both.

What if a player like Allar declares (I don’t think he will).
Yeah I like how Ward gets better every year and went from a small school QB to one of the top QBs in D1. You know he has to have crazy work ethic. If he is a mid-tier starter in the NFL you can definitely build around him. Goff for example is a mid guy but the Lions have built him a squad and he looks great now. Ward has also carried that Miami team to several wins with is promising.

From the little I have watched allar, he reminds me of the old school nfl big strong pocket passer.  From the full half from last saturday I really liked what I saw.  Certainly not top 5 pick but def lower into the draft he would be worthy.  He feels like  a dude canales would like, big strong and throws downfield with velocity and accuracy

    • Either way there's some tough teams on the schedule this year, on paper anyways.
    • Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.
    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
