This is WAY closer to the Falcons drafting Penix after signing Cousins than the Lions drafting Gibbs after signing Montgomery.

Poor allocation of assets across the full roster given where we are as a franchise and state of the roster

One team used a 1st on a RB then extended a vet to a decent contact.  We used a mid 2nd on a RB then extended our vet to a decent contract.  The Lions are actually allocating MORE to their RB room in this scenario.  The fact that you are comparing a $15 million guaranteed contract to the Cousins contract and a mid 2nd to a top 10 pick is just absurd...  I'm not entertaining that.

I think this past offseason was the RB market floor. Teams with run-first offenses are thriving again now that teams went small in their front 7 personnel. RB market trends back up I bet.

again, I dont think this was a bad deal money wise all things considered but there is no way he is getting that contract on the open market

Chuba showed up to camp looking like he had worked all off season to build himself into a workhorse RB. His play is showing that paid off. He’s also somehow improved his hands which is very difficult to do at that point in a career. I’m glad we’re keeping a hard worker who’s performing and seems to be great in the locker room.

I’ll let y’all keep whining though and discussing Sanders like his contract isn’t easy to escape this offseason.

You're making a Gross assumption.

They aren't abeling anybody a starter.

1st and foremost.  Depending on 1 running back and expecting to have a strong running game is foolish. Period.

2nd. Chubby has earned his contract.

3rd Brooks has proven what? You need multiple backs in this league. This definitely spells the end of Sanders.

You are proving my point. If you draft an injured running back in the second round you must believe he has the potential to be a feature back. A team as bad as the Panthers has to be looking to draft starters with their top 3 picks. Extending Chuba indicates he’s the top dog which means we spent a high second round pick on a backup. They will rarely be on the field at the same time. That is poor roster management.

If this team already had a dynamic offense that’d be one thing but we don’t. We are not in the position to be making luxury picks when there’s holes all over the roster.

Lamar Jackson.

They have a Lamborghini we have a tiny Fiat 2 seater.

Heh. We have motorcycle and a side car like Barney Fife.

As far as it goes, they don’t know what they have in Brooks so maybe they were willing to go a little more on Chuba, lacking the leverage he might have provided with a strong couple of games in the can.

He was gon g to get paid something pretty good by someone so what people are doing is freaking over something like 1% of the cap they might have ‘overpaid’. Maybe a couple of mil per season. That is the difference here between a reasonable deal and this travesty, isn’t it?

I really like Chuba, this is a fair deal for both sides and I think it's important as an organization to send a message that we retain our home grown talented players who do the right things.

FURTHER and what I haven't seen yet is: A few years ago we decided not to trade Burns and instead of signing him RIGHT THEN we waited and ultimately took a big loss on the compensation. We clearly learned from that. If you aren't going to trade someone then re-sign them. That is good business in my mind.

Even with that one, Kamara was a mess at Tennessee. He fumbled every fifteen carries like clock work, had suspect hands, and was very frail/fragile. When he come out of the gate playing like he did for New Orleans, everybody was surprised. Don't get me wrong, there has been good RB talent all throughout and after the draft over the years. But when you have a chance to get that difference maker, you take him. Last week, watching Gibbs run that 76 yard touchdown validated everyone in Detroit for taking him top ten. That is four/five passes Goff doesn't have to throw, o-line doesn't have to block, plays kept in the vault, and it demoralizes defenses! There are maybe 3 guys in the NFL that could've made that play and because of plays like that I will never buy into that narrative of RBs are a dime a dozen.

I don't think I was aware of his injury or fumble issues. I saw him looking good when I was looking at RBs and wanted to take him.

My issue is why didn't the panther just offer the miles Sanders deal to huddard? I know why, they viewed miles as the better player..

Why did they use a lower 2nd on RB with the 20 other holes while they had huddard and sanders and blacksen? I know they had brooks as the higher ranked player.

Just very odd it came to this, another take that's similar to mine-

> Pay Miles Sanders 25 mill

> Bench him for chuba hubbard

> Hubbard is the only good player on your team

> Draft RB w/ torn acl in the 2nd RD on a team w/ 0 good players

> ACL RB never plays

> Pay Hubbard 33 million

They have not evolved. And like the process above, they are still confused.

Im about 70/30 against this. I just didn't want to pay RBs until they are truly elite, Hubbard is upper good.

That 30% is due to hubbard getting better each year and playing hard while the team is sucking ass at 1-12. Many of the players praised his work ethic and such. He is one of around 7 players that act like pros with the record being sub .200

Dan has a good draft class in the making(needs 2 more like them with UFDA success), but he's still thinking like a 90s GM.

Miles was originally going to be our feature back. Chuba outplayed him and earned the right to start over him. Now Chuba is a top 10 RB and he got an extension with a guarantee of 15 million dollars. Chuba is a good leader on this team to help establish a new culture of hard work and earning your roster spot. He is also a very good player on a roster without many good players. So we signed him to a 4 year deal that clearly has an easy out in there judging by the guaranteed money. Rewarding hard work and retaining a player like Chuba is a good thing.

In a vacuum I agree,  but given where we are as a franchise? I don’t like putting money in 2nd contracts for RBs…especially when you just drafted the “best RB in the draft”.   That Chubba money could go to all the billion other holes and we don’t have lots of money

    • With the contract money an OT first rounder makes you can ALWAYS get a new girlfriend.  And probably an upgrade at that.  You only got 2 parents.
    • Brother. You are wholly confusing comparing situations and applying actual standards like most other franchises do like simply getting into a playoff series and winning at least 1 or 2 series games with praising. Nobody is praising the Hawks. Nobody is praising the Magic. Nobody here likes those teams. But reality is reality. The Hawks like other franchises have traded players fired coaches etc but they can still win a couple playoff games. How is that not the bare floor for you or anyone else? What are we doing here if it isn't? We've seen eye to eye on many things over the years. But you are in the camp on the Hornets where you are emotionally attached to LaMelo where you feel the need to carry his water like he's got that juice. That's cool that you feel that way. It's your prerogative. But I differ from that viewpoint entirely. If he had that juice we would not have gotten wiped off the court in 2 play in games with 2 different coaching staffs and rosters. if people don't like hearing that well I'm sorry but how the hell is this team ever going to get better and ultimately go anywhere in the postseason if we just blindly pat them on the back for getting their asses whooped before they actually even get into the real playoffs? There seem to be some Bryce Young level standards being applied here. That's wild to me. But to each his own.
    • Proctor/Freeling were always the belles of the ball where we were picking. What those two *could* become at OT was far greater than what others could be at their respective positions and I’m glad our FO could see that.
