That's not true at all.  And a 3rd year #1 draft pick captain of the team should not need a mentor

This is a weird take. Were you this upset when DA was re-signed as Cam's backup/mentor?

I liked Derek Anderson a lot but he was a pal nothing more. Cam Newton in his early years was rookie of the year and built like a tank. People might have had questions about Cam's accuracy but that was it. Nothing at all comparable to the still unanswered questions about Bryce. Not to mention Anderson never had to play any extended time nor did he look horrendously awful in the process.

At the end of the day the people justifying this are the same people who were in here shouting down concern about preseason last year. Carrying water for the decision makers of the sports franchise with the worst win percentage in professional sports is just coping.

Whether he knows the playbook or not I watched him last year and he is ass, washed up ass.  Makes zero sense to not bring in someone else if our coach is supposedly some qb guru.

Mentor is a word someone assumed and now everyone is attacking that assumption.  Dalton knows the system, this is not a good QB year in the draft, and he may have been instrumental in Bryce's turnaround--in the film room, as a respected resource, and someone who does not cause you to tank the season if the starter goes down.  Mentor?  probably, but not the only reason.  I wanted a youngster like Rourke or Howard, but $4m per is not a major expense and you are paying for his expertise and experience.  A backup QB can also watch the OL and WRs etc. and detect problems as well.  I get why they want him back, just may not 100% agree with it.

What’s wrong with a young QB having a mentor? You’re implying that a 3rd year QB should know everything there is about playing QB.  Facts are if it isn’t broken, then why fix it? Bryce went out of his way during his SB media interviews to compliment Dalton. He openly supported Bryce even through his struggles. He’s not going to be a backup clamoring to be the starter. He knows the offense, he supports Bryce and probably acts as an extra coach for him with his knowledge and success he’s had in this league. There’s plenty of things to get upset about with this franchise, bringing back Dalton isn’t one of them.

Also, you have the right not agree with bringing Dalton back, but atleast offer some other solutions? I haven’t heard you bring up one FA QB you’d rather have? If you do bring up a name, I’m sure I can find issues with that QB because at the end of the day, they are all backups for a reason.

Everyone knows Bryce Young is the starter. Although there is still a great deal to prove for him Canales and the rest of the team when the games matter. But friendly competition is good for everyone and makes everyone better. And the Panthers seem to be one of the few teams that do not value this mindset especially regarding the most consequential position on the team. And it is not at all like they have earned any benefit of the doubt either. And again we had these same kind of conversations about preseason last year with the Panthers thinking they know better than the majority of the rest of the league.

Also Derek Anderson is currently 41 years old and has been out of football for going on 7 years now. Andy Dalton will be 38 next season. Just a stupid desperate comparison.

I hated the Bryce pick as much as anyone but I see nothing wrong with keeping Andy here for another year

Having a mentor is always a positive in my book.  How long he has been here or his draft position has nothing to do with it.

Do you think you hit a certain age where you stop learning from others or something?

Hate this move. We should always be trying to improve. There's nothing wrong with and we actually should be trying to develop backup talent. Who's to say that said backup may not surprise the poo out of everyone and be better than Bryce? Dalton has one foot in the NFL grave and one foot on a banana peel. We can and should do better.

    • I watched a clip of all the offensive snaps. Young threw into some tight coverage and the guys made some plays on the ball. He also really missed some throws.  He has this middle of the field thing into a tight window pretty good and made three or four nice plays but he was just too inconsistent with his accuracy especially in the red zone. Today and in general.    That Int where people were chastising Legette for ‘not fighting through the coverage’, he in no way could have gotten to that ball. IMO. I think he thought it was going to hit the ground and didn’t see the defender coming for it. But not sure what he could have done. The camera doesn’t show the spatial relationship very well, I think the ball was way off. maybe 6 feet or more off target to the inside of the field.  Rico is a beast. And a very good receiver.   That was my impression without dissecting and rewinding, just letting the video roll. I did rewind the int two or three times to look at that one.
    • My biggest issue with keeping Darnold, which I felt we should have done, is we would still have Fitterer. And everything that came with that.  I think Morgan is going to be good.  Baker, just did not play well at all here. Not sure what else we were supposed to take away from it at the time.  That’s my short ‘I don’t want to argue about it’ take.
    • Even if we somehow make the playoffs we will be one and done so fast. Seattle, Rams, TB, Panthers, Detroit and Philly are all better than us.
