Shades of Brian Burns.

Brian Burns not being a 10+ sack guy a year and being a run game liability is why we were smart to let him walk.

Williams is an asset in the run game Day 1. No question.

Burns had a big ego on top of it all. Legend in his own mind.

I'm certainly very intrigued by Mykel as a prospect it's the notion that we are rolling the dice on a top 10 pick with only the hope that he can become a force as a pass rusher.

That being said I'm certainly more upbeat about the possibility of Mykel Williams honing his craft than I am someone like Shemar Stewart. But who knows with our Panthers. We continually seem to make the wrong decision.

Absolutely agree in regards to Shemar Stewart. He plays like the Tasmanian devil. He doesn't seem to attack anything cerebrally, but only relies on his athleticism. He's a scary prospect and one that has been seen before with the likes of Mamula and Vernon Gholston. He just has 10 year vet that bounces around the league written all over him for me. He will continually get chances because he isn't bad but he never puts it all together.

Williams seems like a very smart kid and understands what to look for and how to attack it. He just needs to go from diagnosing to execution faster and he will be a great player. He already has great technique.

I don't think so anymore. I did at one point, but I think they have liked Williams more all along.

Why have they shown so much interest in meeting with Walker and so little with Williams?

Yes...if it's one thing he will do really well coming in is stop the run.

Look... I think we all just need to come to terms with the fact we are taking Mykel Williams. There have been multiple insiders that say he is the guy. Same thing happened last year with Legette and the year before with Bryce. This team is anything but unpredictable when it comes to the draft.

If you look at visits and things the team has said it's going to be Walker not Williams. He's the only player we did 3 separate visits with and the only one coach publicly slobbered all over that I've heard. The unpredictability is spot on but all signs point to walker, insiders pay less than 0 attention to the panthers

Higher ceiling than Burns IMO. Already a better run defender and if he cam develop as a pass rusher he surpasses Burns easy

I don't think he has a higher ceiling than Burns at all. It's just that Burns very obviously never reached his ceiling(nor likely ever will).

Truthfully, Burns was a considerably better prospect than every DE/EDGE in this draft, to say nothing of an OLB guy like Walker. I do think people forget how amazing Burns was on tape coming from FSU.

But, in a tale as old as the NFL itself, there are ample players that have elite tier physical ability that can never fully realize that same elite potential.

See Shemar Stewart for a likely strong candidate in this draft to fall victim to this same scenario.

And he is not even close to the talent Burns was.

His biggest issue was buying into his own hype. It didn't help he had his brother in his ear at every turn building him up even when he was disappearing out there on the field and stinking up the joint. But they got what they wanted. The big payday. That was more important to Brian that cementing his place as an elite pass rusher amongst his peers.

But listen let's get down to it here. Regardless of how one feels about Mykel Williams or any other DL prospect maybe we should consider an alternative measuring tool going forward for our historically bad defense that isn’t defined by just being marginally better than Brian Burns. I'm just saying.

Burns has never filled out his frame and worked on his torque to become a relevant run blocker. But because of his pass rush skills (minus his missed sacks/bad angles), you’re stuck putting out there on running downs needing to overcompensate elsewhere on your front-7 in run defense. Frustrating to have.

When the boom/busts that have the run defense floor, it’s a bit more manageable than having teams just gash us for 5.0+ ypc consistently with some flashy guy whiffing on sacks, eventually getting to 8-10 on the season.

    • Went to school in MD when this came out. Dance floor got CRAZY when this joint came on!
    • They had best show out in Week 1 there are zero,I mean zero,  excuses for that offense  defense, haven’t play together yet and they still have Mr Soft and Predictable as DC  I expect break downs at times  …but that offense returns all starters except Tremble and both Mayes and Brady are veterans and can play LG and know the system not up for any participation awards this season they can save that practice energy for Jacksonville.     I’m sick of the, winning,  or looking competitive, when it doesn’t matter.
    • There are some tough decisions that I'm eager to see the results of... Does Blackshear sneak on to the roster as RB4? Does the team go with 4 TEs or just 3 again? And has Mitchell Evans done enough to defend his roster spot from James Mitchell? Who is WR6 and is there a WR7? TMac, XL, Coker, and AT seem to be locks imo and I'm assuming Renfrow also makes it due to all of the camp praise. Who makes it between Brycen Tremayne, Jimmy Horn Jr, and David Moore? If the team goes with 7 WRs, which one of those three doesn't make it? Jacolby George and Emani Bailey both have not gotten a lot of game time. Could the Panthers be trying to hide them so that they can be stashed on the PS? Do they go with 10 OL instead of 9? Who makes it out of Walton, Carter, and Kingston? DL locks are DB, BB3, ARob, and Turk. That leaves Jaden Crumedy, Cam Jackson, Sam Roberts, Shy Tuttle, and LaBryan Ray all competing for the final 1 - 3 spots. Does DJ Johnson get IR'd and Thomas Incoom make the roster as EDGE5? What in the fuuuuuuuuuuuuck is going to happen at LB? Only locks seem to be Wallace, Rozeboom, and Cherelus (Wallace has mentioned in media how Cherelus has been big bro for him on the team). Rhattigan had some good moments against Houston, Martin-Scott is an SC guy, Krys Barnes has popped on defense and on special teams, and Windmon got time starting for the team last season. Are two of those guys going to make it or are the Panthers poaching from another team's cuts? CB5... who is it? Do they go with the 4 expected safeties or bring in a 5th? Has Ransom done enough to take the start from Nick Scott?
