Well, the Niners just doomed themselves to mediocrity

Because we suck at using 'tweeners properly, on either side of the ball.  Always have and always will.

Except for maybe TD. But that guy was a freak of nature. You probably could have had him put his hand in the dirt at Edge, and he would have gotten you double digit sacks.

I don't think Samuel is even a tweener.   He is a slot WR that you can scheme some quirky stuff for around the line of scrimmage or backfield.

Never made sense to draft him in a draft where you draft CMC though.   CMC was going to eat everything you would essentially draft Samuel to do.   And oddly enough, his best year......CMC was hurt the whole year.

Not sure why people work so hard to try and say Purdy is terrible.  He seems like a really likable hard working QB.  To put things into perspective look at the panthers all time leading passing stats vs purdys image.png.ddcf01c779443a87964c8eacbf177cd2.pngimage.png.4321bb21b0df0052f2249facbfa16f56.png

So Purdy has played very few games and his down year would be 4 or 5 all time for the panthers and his best year would be 2nd all time for the panthers.  Not sure why anyone would think paying this qb who is still growing in the game 7th overall for this year which will most likely fall to 14 or 15th overall next year is a bad move.  He had no one last year and still put up good numbers the panthers arguably had better skill players than the 49ers did healthy last year.  panthers had better healthy rb, wr were close to equal slight edge to panthers, and the 49ers had way better te play.

Who has said that Purdy is terrible?

about half the people posting on this thread have said Purdy is a journeyman below average qb at best.  It is interesting how many panther fans are 49er fans also guessing b/c of Cmac.  But really right now all this conversation is pointless but at the end of the year someone needs to remember to bring this thread back up so we can see how Purdy did and how deebo did on a new team and we can continue the discussion.

You're arguing against posts that haven't even been made. Roughly half the thread is people arguing it's a good move and the other half is people saying he's a mid-level starter who isn't worth carrying this type of cap impact. I don't think I've seen a single person saying he's a below average QB at best and that's why you're backpedaling. First it was "terrible", now it's "below average at best". Mischaracterizing others' arguments doesn't make yours stronger.

Samuel was definitely a 'tweener.   I would argue he would have had a better career as a RB in the NFL, especially as the 3rd down back.  He was projected to be a better RB than WR at the next level by many draft gurus.  Your right though, he was a poor man's CMC and the reason we opted to make him a WR because CMC was eating up the RB reps.

Its possible. Given the higher value and longer expected career length of WR vs. RB I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't pushing to play WR himself, but honestly Samuel would've probably been best used as a Deebo type of player - essentially a RB/WR hybrid. And yeah, drafting him right after CMC was head scratching and I said so at the time. Like, why did we just draft a poor man's version of CMC right after drafting CMC. I said the same when we drafted Funchess. Why did we just draft a poor man's version of KB when we just spent a 1st rounder on KB last year?

I was more referencing the Panthers putting him out wide on the outside at WR.  He wasn't a tweener in the context we were moving him around.   That should of never been on the table.

But yeah, gadget 3rd down RB or slot WR? Tweener in that regard.  Sure.

TD came in as a 'tweener from college, but struggled until we settled him in strictly as a LB and stripped him of any safety responsibilities.   I liked the TD pick and was hopeful for him as a safety, but he looked lost that rookie year trying to balance both roles.  That's why I am astonished that Jeremy Chinn was so  adverse to playing LB besides that one season...where he flourished.  All he had to do was take a page out of TD's book.

Purdy saved the 49ers from that three 1st picks for Trey Lance. People forget that.

People also forget he should have MVP votes for the 23 season.

He's been any where from the 8th(his best/23) to 14th ranked QB, he's legit and guys around top 10 get paid as QBs.....guys in 28th get paid too, he's 4x the QB Trevor Lawrence is and better than BY by miles as well...even without CMC, Samuel(whos a RB playing WE), and half the OL.

*BUT*

You non-believers missed this ultra important mistake that honestly made me reconsider all the praise I gave him.

https://www.si.com/nfl/49ers/news/49ers-qb-brock-purdy-throws-blind-40-percent

That's is damming to my case and reset my thinking of his. That's nuclear scary now and I need some time.

too honest for me to overlook.

This is us in two years.  I wouldn't be making fun of the 49ers.  Purdy got that deal as Mr. Irrelevant.  We had the #1 overall pick.  Talk about a team crippling contract.  They still still have a window if their key players can stay healthy.  We haven't even reached a window yet, let alone it being open.

And people on here really tried to tell me winning wasnt that important along with bryces development the next 2 years.  So you want to pay a QB that's not top of the league AND has yet to produce a winning season? Yeah count me out.

The Panthers got more out of him than anyone. Samual just wasn't or isn't a great player. He's a decent player. You say "we" but it's like 4 coaching staffs.

One of out all time greats was a tweener.
