Panthers give out massive guarantees to their Undrafted Free Agents

This is a real bonus with him throwing his money around we end up with really good prospects. We’ve seen what a top undrafted player can do it seems we’re looking for a Cooker type of production again that’s a big deal. Getting good production with that kind of salary and hunger can be key to a good year for us.

Only the top 51 roster spots count toward the cap for a given year, so any money thrown toward UDFAs is 100% a lure to get them here.

If there is someone we really want, maybe he's able to throw enough money to convince them to come here over somewhere else.

But at the same time, if I'm an UDFA, unless I'm just looking for a quick money grab before heading into a normal career, I'm telling my agent to get me to the team I'm most likely to get a chance to make the team and/or be seen enough to then get picked up by someone else.

Any good agent should be steering their UDFA's that way anyways, not like they're making all that much money on a "big" guarantee like these, they stand to gain much more from a client who makes a roster.

Right. I don't disagree with what you are saying, but let's just use Bam Martin-Scott as the example. 

He ideally is looking for a LB needy team where he can possibly latch on to longer term.  We check that box. So if we check that box AND are giving double what the next team is why wouldn't he come here?  This is where we can blow the competition out of the water, say someone like Cincinnati. They have a very cheap owner, because he doesn't have a lot of spending cash, who can't "throw away" this type of money on UDFAs. 

Everything comes down to a risk/reward analysis. For us, the risk for these high guarantees is the lost money, which Tepper can throw around a lot more than most owners. 

We should consistently be getting the pick of the litter, at areas of need, for UDFAs because everyone wins. We get the players we want at camp and they get a bit of security with larger guarantees.

If one of these guys with guaranteed money doesn't make the team and then goes to another team, does the guarantee still hold? Do we pay part of their salary at another team?

Or does it work the opposite way and tell them hey, we paid your salary for the season, you can't go elsewhere and keep that guarantee? If so, doesn't that create basically a second practice squad of reserves to call up from?

If Tepper put his net worth in 10 year treasuries he'd be pulling in about $2.3 million in interest every day.  Maybe he told Morgan - "here's a days interest, now go get me 10 UDFA's".

Good question and it made me curious. According to the google this would be dead money on our side although with the contract not being top 51 it doesn’t count against the cap. The other team will pay him whatever they agree to pay him.  So if he got guaranteed money of 250k from us and another 250 from his new team he has 500k. 

Caveat this by saying it was only five minutes of deep analysis on my part so it may be flawed but satisfies my curiosity nonetheless.

I dont trust Tepper in building a nfl franchise but I would in minute give him every penny I owned to invest.  Dude has the midas touch

He also appears (at least) to be letting the staff do their job. DMo. in 1 of his interviews. even balked at the idea that Tepper was a meddler. Once you have that reputation, it's hard to be rid of it, but I hope Tep has learned his lesson.

I definitely get it. A lot better chance that those guys make the 53 than if they were in KC or Philly.

What does say a 6th/7th rounder contract look like? I would see this as the ceiling on contracts he could splash at UDFAs before it’s disrespectful to your late round drafted guys. 
 

that said, I’m all for any way there is to retain all good talent.
