That's just from memory bub, and considering how awful we have been for 7 years that aren't memorable in any way...  its basically 5 years lol. In 2015 people were melting down about the offensive line swearing cam would be on IR by week 5.

And I completely agree, the saying is Rome wasn't built in a day and all.

Like I've said my expectations for this year aren't grandiose or crazy with homerism I want a watchable/entertaining offense....

If our defense could get up to about #22 overall I would be extatic.... I have zero expectations on that side of the ball.

3-1 in our warm up games in 2015 by the way.   But it’s all “recency bias”.

Dating back to 2003 (which is as far back as ESPN goes)…..Panthers have never had a winning season paired with a bad preseason (losing preseason)

Every winning season paired with a .500 or better preseason since 03

and I think the only winning preseason paired with losing season was 04 when 89 broke his leg week 1.

maybe there is a game I missed somewhere.  But that’s not recency bias.  It’s just the way it has been in Carolina since 2003.   Could it just be a coincidence? Sure.  As I don’t really care about wins in a preseason.  But it is a consistent trend in Carolina that results in a random fact

Someone has done a pretty in depth analysis on reddit

https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/s/cLRbUjn68k

Spoiler alert, there is no correlation between preseason performance and regular season performances. From the Rams going 0-3 and winning the Super Bowl to the Browns and Lions going winless after going 4-0.

Fans want to bring up a correlation specifically with our team and ignore how it has none on the whole NFL. You are looking at different staffs and rosters over the years as well so any correlation would just be a coincidence.

From the Reddit post

“In conclusion, the preseason is many things. A battle for roster spots, a reprieve for NFL fans starving for games, a chance to see your team’s draft picks in action. But one thing it is definitely not is a crystal ball for the future of a team at large. Enjoy the preseason for what it is, but take it with a grain of salt, especially if your team doesn’t give its main QB any preseason snaps. The only fair conclusion might be that if your stating QB plays in the preseason and you have a double-digit point deficit, that may not be a good sign for postseason hopes. This may be statistical noise however, as we’ve only had one year of a three-week preseason, and thus a small sample size to draw from.”

At the end of the day you can draw conclusions to fit your narrative and pulling numbers from other teams to try and prop up the franchise with the worst win percentage in professional sports under the Tepper's is no different.

The fact of the matter is this franchise has been putting out a mediocre to terrible product for a long time now. Even under Richardson we had a losing season every other year. You can't assign the same benefit of the doubt as you would other franchises (even the Jets and Browns have been at least marginally better than us as of late) unless you are engaging in some level of cope. And if you want to do that hey great for you. Call it what it is though.

All this game showed me was:

1. Starters will be decent

2. We have terrible depth

3. Special teams will be..............special

Oh yeah, and Andy Dalton sucks ass

About depth:

S: I think we have 3/4 that can start.

CB: With Thornton, Horn, Jackson, and Smith Wade, Bartholomew and Evans behind them--we are deep (somehow).

ILB:  No depth.  We need some badly

OLB:  Wonnum, Jones, Scourton, Princely, and maybe a fifth--we are deep.

DE: Brown, Robinson, Wharton---and Ray, who I think sucked last year--maybe we could use one more.

DT:  Brown, Cam Jackson, Shy Tuttle--not bad--Shy better play better

OFFENSE

WR--TMac, XL, AT, Coker, Renfrow, and Horn--good depth

TE--Tremble, Sanders, Evans--not flashy but solid

OL--Christensen, Mays, Zavala--that is pretty good depth.

RB--Chuba, Dowdle, Brooks, Etienne---stable full

QB--Young, Dalton, Plummer---not much depth

So I think we have depth issues at

1. ILB  (personally, Rozeboom is a backup and Wallace is not without flaws)

2. DE  (need a fourth)

3. QB (Hard to find a backup better than Dalton, and that is sad)

Surprisingly, DBs on paper look good.

Stopped reading after he said another ass whooping didn’t matter.

Yeah it's preseason and these games don't count but getting our asses whooped has been the consistent story more often than not of the Carolina Panthers since at least 2018.

That matters.

Thank you, ... Tired of the same old same old.

The logic of Bryce looked terrific and then say BUT keep in mind Sanders did what he did vs backups…..is some type of logic

Lmaoooo...all you can do is laugh at this point.

Down playing a rookie in his very first game vs a guy in his 3rd season. The logic.

Son, this is a Panthers' forum.

Feel free to go here to be excited about the Browns' new QB.

Carrying the water for both Jimmy Haslam and Woody Johnson is wild but go off.

The winning and losing is irrelevant. How your players play and team looks is a different thing, IMO.

Especially back in the day, it wasn't uncommon to see starters get whipped for a couple of series but then a turnaround by 2nd or 3rd string units.

Also, it's largely a bunch of vanilla playcalling. These are exercises in player evaluations, nothing more.

So, there isn't a reason to freak out about getting beat by 30 by the Browns. Now there are ample reasons to be concerned about some of the players and how they performed. The depth being trash, I mean....if you couldn't tell that from just looking at the roster, I don't know what to say. This is very likely the second worst roster in Panthers history, behind the 2024 roster.

Player performances would definitely be a good thing to look at. Special teams also lets us know our depth is bad but we all already knew that. I don’t think anyone is expecting us to be great this year. The hope is they can build on how they finished last year and get some more wins.

Yeah, just show me we finally have some pieces to build with and that's a start. IDC if Canales is the guy or not. We can find coaches if we start gathering talent and show competence.

Thanks,  I forgot the forum name excuses making jackass comments. I gotta stay on top of these things.

It would be fair to classify comments openly cheerleading an opposing player playing well against our camp bodies while ignoring that he played nowhere near as well against the guys who are likely to be on the final roster as "jackass comments".

    • Care to elaborate why you disagree? We kicked the ball off 3 times and we kept the Browns to starting field position of the 22, 27, and 10 (would have been 21 before a penalty). All 3 of those are successes with the modern kickoff rule.
    • Its August so obviously quality options are not there. The question is whether any improvement can be made to the bottom of the depth chart.
    • NFL has a huge amount of parity.  The talent level between most NFL starters outside of the top 5 to 10 guys at a position is very comparable.  2020 worst teams Jacksonville Jaguars - 1-15 (worst record in NFL) New York Jets - 2-14 Cincinnati Bengals - 4-11-1 Atlanta Falcons - 4-12 Houston Texans - 4-12 Carolina Panthers - 5-11 Detroit Lions - 5-11 Philadelphia Eagles - 4-11-1 Los Angeles Chargers - 7-9 Denver Broncos - 5-11 2024 Worst teams New York Giants - 3-14 (tied for worst) Cleveland Browns - 3-14 (tied for worst) Tennessee Titans - 3-14 (tied for worst) New England Patriots - 4-13 Carolina Panthers - 5-12 Jacksonville Jaguars - 4-13 Las Vegas Raiders - 4-13 New York Jets - 5-12 Chicago Bears - 5-12 Arizona Cardinals - 8-9 Bengals, Texans, Lions, Eagles, Broncos and the Jags have all made the the playoffs in the last 3 years. What I'm saying is it's stupid to argue when team is the worst when there is so much parity and the system allows quick turnarounds.
