Evero?!?! Should he be on the Hot Seat

It’s funny, bc it seemed like the entire board believed he was a genius after that first season, but ever since, the tide has dramatically turned.  I too was drinking the kool-aid after that first season, but idk wtf has happened…  it’s not just injuries.  Every year coaches make more with less, injuries included.  There is something wrong schematically and strategically.  And tbh, our defense just doesn’t look well-coached, which isn’t just on Evero but the position coaches.  Poor technique, poor angles, poor gap/assignment discipline, knocking each other out of plays constantly.  Idk what it is exactly, but it’s not encouraging to say the least.

THIS^^^^

I saw this the other night and thought how can this be happening again.  That seemed to be our biggest issue last year.  Bunching up and getting knocked out of the play.  Tackling a RB we hit at the line of scrimmage and finally made the tackle 10 yards later.

The Tepper era has loved the scapegoat model to date.   Always a guy lined up and ready if things go south to take the heat.

Fanbase was way too happy at the end of the year and allowed Tepper to roll Evero into this year.

I don't know if it's scheme or personnel but there was no pass rush whatsoever until he started blitzing DBs the other night. That's been the status quo with his scheme. I feel we should let him go and return to using a 4-3 defense.

The whole need to be 3-4ish is David Tepper.

3-4 sucks. Has always sucked. But it doesn’t help he is a terrible defensive coordinator.
He should have been fired last year but thankfully this is the last year on his contract.
We will lose games because of his defense.

The majority of the top defenses over last several seasons are 3-4

That leads to the next question.  How many games do we give him?  2, 3, 5, 8?

If our offense is lighting it up (Top 10 minimum) I think you consider making a change if the defense is not in the top 18 statistically.

Realistically you don’t go from worst ever to top 10 unit but as you stated in your initial post “Show us something sheesh”

Since we have a lot of young players I say the sweet spot is around game 7 or 8. I’m not opposed to letting him finish the year though because our roster is still void of high end talent.  I don’t think we have a playoff roster.

I absolutely would like a change after this season unless we are a top 15ish defense. I just haven’t seen enough.  I disagree with many on the forum though. I would like to continue to run the 3-4.

Evero's seat is uncomfortably warm, for sure, but I appreciate the team not scapegoating him after last season. They sunk everything into the offense and left the defense being held together by spit and duct tape.

Then lose the two leaders in DB + Shaq to start? Ugh...

I'm hoping to see more of a return to scheme now that he's got the talent to execute. Going to need a lot of luck though to get through the season healthy. DBs might not be as bad as originally feared (though a starting-caliber safety would be the cherry on top) and the DL is deep after all of the resources thrown at it... but the LB room is rough.

I don't expect to start seeing strides until midway through the season. The Bills game I think will be a big tone setter for the rest of the season for the defense.

    • Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
    • You gonna make me post Stank before every game?  I kid, I kid.
