I can guarantee you, with absolute confidence and certainty, he was never going to sit out.

You’re probably right on that hypothetical sit out situation. I actually agree.  I just feel we have coddled Bryce for two seasons. It’s time to sink or swim. Thielen was not going to be here next year, and we have a QB decision to make. There are some pretty good QB’s coming out this year so we need to know if it’s time to move on.  This season will give it to us all, raw and unfiltered.

Hunter was always primed to be cut because he was not subject to waiver wire pickups.  Another team could not claim him.  Typical NFL move to not expose a young player with potential to waivers.  This was always likely.

We are no longer dependant on a 37 year old ageing vet WR who wanted out for this team to succeed.  We are past that.  Dan did play hardball.  A 4th and 5th draft pick and we didn't take on any of his salary.  What world is that not a steal?

Cokers injury sucks as I do think he is going to be really good.

Black cat curse is a bunch of BS.

Love Hunter is back, but again, until we know what Tet and XL are this season, Coker was our best WR.

so…

sad workaholics GIF

Coker was/is hardly our best receiver. No need to debate it; wait and see the results.

AT was basically Greg Olsen-ish for Bryce.

Scrolling through this thread I was going to point out the same thing same as I believe proudiddy also did above you.  Guy helped the hell out of BY and the rest of the team.  That may hurt us worse than the actual catches he made, though they were nothing to sneeze at either..

Come on bro, of course I know you don’t get paid if you sit out. That’s why the players call it game checks, which are prorated payments for games outside of bonuses.  Like I said, I agree he probably wouldn’t have sat out, but when you’re a multimillionaire with a simple life, your future is set.  AT’s life is not dependent on money. Don’t confuse his life with the plight of the ordinary man.

I have never been a professional athlete but I understand the importance of locker room culture and distractions. Forcing AT to be here would not have gone well.

I am just curious on your perspective. How would that help us in 2026 and beyond?  We had to pull him out of retirement with additional $$$ just to play. This was Thielen’s last year.

If AT was 30 years old and planned to play for 3 more years I understand the uproar. If Bryce can’t make it without a 35 year one year rental this year, he will not make it in 2026 and beyond.  We need to rip the band-aid off and see if he is a franchise QB to build around. If not, we draft a QB again and potentially start over with Canales pick at QB.

    • I think cutting Renfrow at the time was actually a move to try to increase Thielen's trade value. They are essentially the same player and having them both on the roster slightly deminishes their value.
    • In my view, and this is not based on any evidence beyond memory, the best backups are those who were drafted, thrown into the fire too early, then discarded as a bust.  Some really improve once they have been given a chance to lick their wounds, watch, and work with the QB room for a year or two.  I think there is something to the Parcells (I think) formula:  "Bill Parcells had a seven-point "formula" or checklist for drafting a quarterback: be a three-year starter, a college senior, a graduate, have a minimum of 30 starts and 23 wins, maintain a 2:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio, and achieve at least a 60% completion percentage."  Having said that, Parcells' comment was long before the new college offenses and portal jumping, but the basic formula frames what it takes.  So players like Trey Lance, Anthony Richardson, Zach Wilson, Jameis Winston (to a degree), are TYPES that defend my position.  Richardson has not hit rock bottom and rebounded yet, and I am not sure Wilson will ever amount to anything beyond his 2020 BYU season, but this kind of player knows what it is like to be the "the guy" and they know the weaknesses in their game that other teams exploited.  Of course there are exceptions etc., but this is simply my preference.  Derek Anderson is a good example. In college, he completed 50% of his passes and threw 57 interceptions vs. 79 TDs.  As a backup, he was not bad.  I think Dalton is a decent backup, fwiw.  Anderson actually won 20 games as a pro (vs. 29 losses) and when he started for the Panthers, he was 2-2 (2014 and 2016) and completed 67.5% of his passes.
