We don't have the personnel to field a strong front 7 in a 3-4 defense. They need to transition to a 4-3, but I don't think Tepper would allow it. DB would thrive in a 4-3 as a NT if he had at least one legit pass rusher on the line with him.

Don't think it matters whether you have DB as a 4-3 DT or a 3-4 end when the rest of the front 7 just isn't very good. Dude is going to command double teams regardless on how we line him up.

I agree with both of you. My point is that since Rivera's last season in Carolina (2019) we have primarily a run a 3-4 and drafted our defensive players to field a 3-4 as our base defense. I was just saying we need to change direction next season. We should move DB to a 4-3 DT and find some true 4-3 lineman and a MLB to carry on the tradition of Dan Morgan, Jon Beason, and Luke. That alone would improve or run defense.

That said, I don't think we have the FO to these moves.

They need starters regardless of the base the chose to play. The only way they can fix that is through the draft. They've tried to buy the front seven since they can't draft one. They players not suitable for a 4-3 or a 3-4 scheme. They are mixed up group of career backups trying to be a versatile front defense under a guy who should have been canned 2 years ago.

We really haven't run that much 3-4 under Evero - and I would imagine even more so this season since we have inept ILBs. We have played a lot of nickel with an even front and we look just as bad in that as we do in 3-4.

The problem is we have had to dedicate so much drafting/free agency signing to offense to try and make Bryce look competent that we have completely neglected the defense and gone bargain bin shopping for most of our players. We aren't going to be able to find good linemen/linebackers quickly, although I do think Scourton and Princely have flexibility in being able to play 4-3 DE or edge rusher OLB (if they develop into starters).

Not sure how much say Evero has had in choosing our FA defensive players, but if these are guys he wanted, that is a fireable offense alone. It really is a hodgepodge of players that do not complement each other one bit.

Rivera started moving to mixed fronts the year before that too. Pretty sure it was a Tepper mandate. Run the 3-4 like the Steelers or else.

I don't think either do "Scourton or Princely" but if Princely gains weight I'd have more confidence in him getting it and playing well. Scourton playing end is what tanked his draft stock and why 4-3 teams weren't looking at him.

This is the type of players he asked for to run his hybrid defense that no players fit.

Hot takes during the first 24-hours

  • Run game looked good
  • Bryce looked bad
  • LBs looked terrible
  • Moehrig + Wharton looked good
  • TMac looked good

After the 24-hours

  • Run game did indeed look good
  • TMac also did indeed look good
  • Bryce wasn't that bad but he damn sure wasn't good either
  • Moehrig + Wharton were apparently not as good as I had thought? Still haven't gotten a chance to review the defensive all-22.
  • PFF grades confirmed that LBs were indeed gutter

    • You bring up a good point on the stability part and i would agree that probably will factor into it. But yes, Tepper does have a strong influence on who stays/goes but I still believe ultimately it'is Morgan, Tilis and Canales who will decide.
    • I can always count on yout to put things so delicately lol. I'm still not sold on the fact that Tepper will make them keep him if they don't see him as a long term answer.
    • holy poo... this thread inspired me to keep trying to guess passwords to various alts I've created over the years and I finally got in! I pretty much accepted my fate as a lurker for the last several months because I could not remember my password. I didn't realize that new users couldn't join either, that explains things. I have been around for years under several different monikers, through the good and bad. I too always find myself coming back here even with all of the new social media options for Panther fan engagement. It's simply nostalgic.   I do get extremely annoyed with the same 5-10 posters shitting on Bryce and complaining about everything. It's unfortunate that half of them are mods and that nobody new can join because now I pretty much just come on here and see Bryce / Panther slander. There is barely any positivity to be had. We all watch this team and hang on this forum for entertainment purposes only. We have no control or say in anything. I used to be such a crazy ass fan that would argue with strangers about Cam newton on the internet and at games. Now, as a father of 3, a business owner and someone with way gnarlier life problems - I like to watch football and talk about football as an escape. Not to bitch more. I really like the direction of the team and will root anyone in a Panthers jersey. I live down the street from the Rams practice facility, Matthew Stafford is currently coaching his daughters flag football team in the same program I coach my sons. I have two highly ranked Rams staff members sons on my team. The way we beat them and had them on the ropes in the playoffs has me feeling amazing, and you would think we have the next great thing in Bryce with the way they all speak of him. I'm gonna ride that high and be a delusional fan, I hope that huddle can stick around or get fixed and perhaps I will get back to posting more now that I can log in again. I will do my best to not get banned. Keep Pounding!
