Dan Orlovsky on Bryce Young

Recommended Posts

He's getting close. He's acknowledging that Bryce's footwork is complete trash, that he's not seeing coverage, that lots of balls are coming out late and not on time, and that he's still throwing up hospital balls. But since he's an admitted fan and believer in Bryce it still can't be Bryce's fault yet.

Can you imagine coming back from severe UC, not sure if you’d ever play again, missed a full season, have a triumphant comeback story in the making, and then week 1 every significant catch attempt you had, the QB tried to send your ass to the upper room?  So tired of that poo.

I haven’t paid attention to ESPN for years now, so I didn’t know Dan was a fan.  But, considering how he ended that video, I was a little perturbed with his optimistic ending because you literally just showed him throw to get the receiver smoked multiple times, being completely unaware of the defender lurking - both in the pick and the last throw to Renfrow.  How many times does a guy have to do that for it to not be considered “not characteristic” anymore?  Bc Bryce has been doing it for 3 years now.

It's cope from a believer. But if you drop the first and last 15 seconds or so he told a lot of truth in between he just can't allow himself to see it yet. It still has to be someone else's fault that Bryce is failing.

Ironically enough what I think will ultimately do Bryce in/will be why he won’t make it in the league won’t be his size concerns, but his mental makeup.

He is a historical outlier in size and due to that has smaller and stricter windows, but he *has* shown he can play, but only when it doesn’t matter. The best football we’ve seen from Bryce was that preseason Buffalo drive and then down the stretch last year after we were already eliminated

Remember the look on JJs face last night after that TD pass to Jones towards the end of the game? Dude looked like a straight killer. That’s the face of a dude that’s locked the fug in, completely ignoring any and all noise. Reminded me of prime Cams infamous nod prior to orchestrating a game winning drive right after seeing the Saints take the lead.

Probably hyperbolic but that shot convinced me JJ will be a dude for the Vikings. Yes they have a great staff but that kind of mentality isn’t something that’s taught.

to succeed as a young QB in this league you need some level of that coldness/killer mentality in you to push through the adversity that will inevitably come when you have a bad game, throw a pick 6, or your line gets blown up.

i don’t see any of that in Bryce. I want to be wrong, and hope someone can quote this post with a “wow that aged like milk!” someday, but I don’t think it’s happening.

if Bryce had that mentality in him, I honestly think he could play and work through it, but I just don’t think he does

Okay so he and we are acknowledging that Bryce is still making mistakes and not recognizing basic coverages in his third season. So what does he do to prepare? Remember before the draft the entire hype around him revolved around not only his ability to improvise when the play breaks down on the field but his dedication to preparation off the field in the film room. So if all of this is happening and his footwork is still anywhere between mediocre and horrific in any given play what is he doing in the offseason and in between games? This and his elite processing was supposed to be his key selling point. Then leadership was the sprinkle on top and let's be honest that's lacking at best too. So what is it that Bryce Young excels at in any phase of the game right now?....

I think a lot of his mental problems come from the fact that he knows he lacks the physical ability to play at this level.

It’s also an ESPN guy making sure he leads his videos with IM A BRYCE BELIEVER

ESPN guys can’t trash him, probably because of Alabama reasons.

I think Dan is right about the footwork. He’s futzing around with his drop to time his shuffle hitch throw appropriately. Bryce doesn’t like to put his foot in the ground and throw. He likes to crow hop a little

unfortunately for Hunter digestive tract, there’s a safety Bryce either doesn’t see or doesn’t read and hospital balls him.

Those passes to Hunter were all begging to get him sent home on a stretcher, Everytime one went his way I held my breath.

I get what you’re saying but the reason I think his mentality underscores it all is that he did have legitimately solid and sometimes even good games at the end of last year after his bench, and against some good teams (PHI, Tampa, KC)

but that was only after the season was shot and everyone thought he was done for.

then once he had to play a meaningful game on Sunday he crumbled right back to pre bench form. It’s like he’s only able to when it *doesnt* matter

But all just semantics tbh, we both agree that he ain’t it lol
