The Bryce Young "Game Winning Drive" narrative needs to end

Recommended Posts

I agree with OP notion, QBs always get credited for game winning drives even if they do minimal. Just last night Caleb got credited for a GE drive when they basically ran the ball the whole drive and only had to go 36 yards.

And there are drives where Bryce could of had a game winning drive if not for a Legette drop vs Philly or a Chubba fumble vs Tampa

You are actually, genuinely comparing Bryce to Jimmy fuging Pickles?

Jimmy accounted for 3 touchdowns in his 10 starts in 2010. In Bryce’s 10 games post benching last year, he accounted for 20 touchdowns.

Jimmy threw three touchdowns in 2010. Three. Bryce has thrown 10 touchdowns through 6 games. He is currently on track to throw for 3300 yards, 28 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

Wtf are we even talking about anymore. I mean seriously

Yeah, you can pick out 11 games from Bryce’s rookie season….where he accounted for just 3 total TDs.

Hmmm….pretty sure that’s most definitely was Jimmy-esque.   It was historically bad QB play from Bryce.  Like I said, he would have been gone after his rookie season if he cost a 2nd round pick.  No second season.

Bringing up Cam and Jake is the wild part.   Bryce isn’t better than PJ freaking Walker

This is what people don’t get. For him to really zip a ball longer than 15-20 yards or to get the ball wayyyyy downfield he has to set up just right and put his body into it. Which is frustrating because you see the Mayfields, Mahomes, Herberts, etc make the same throw running for their life on their backfoot.

he can do it, its just harder for him to do it than most QBs.

That is sort of the whole thing for some people. Count me in.

His head coach wanted nothing to do with him and lost his job over it.
We are almost 2.5 seasons later still arguing about it.

According to Pro Football Reference, a game-winning drive (GWD) is defined by the following criteria:

  • The team must win the game.
  • The offensive drive must occur in the fourth quarter or overtime.
  • The scoring play that ultimately puts the winning team ahead for the final time must be the result of this offensive drive.
  • At the start of the drive, the team must be tied or trailing by no more than one score (1-8 points).
  • The drive can start in the third quarter, as long as offensive plays are run in the fourth quarter or overtime.

As long as the same criteria is used for every quarterback in the league I am fine with his game winning drives. No one is going to overlook the W-L record the panthers have over the time Bryce has been here. The game winning drives are a credit to the players on the field, not just Bryce. If just one receiver had not made a crucial catch when targeted in the last 6 minutes of the game we would be having a different conversation this week.

He threw too flat of a ball. XL was wide the fug open. Better throw and a guy with broken ribs doesn’t have to fully lay out.

And that wasn’t the last throw of the game. It was second and four. Bryce ate poo the next two plays.

and if Chuba hadn’t fumbled they’d probably have just kept running him. Then we’d have people arguing that Bryce throwing one pass and Chuba running 5-6 times was actually a gwd because….

That TD pass to Legette against Miami. Elite.

The play where Bryce rolls right to buy time until Tet can reverse field.  Bryce pumps as multiple defenders close in.  He barely gets it away before he takes a big time hit.  Beautiful off platform throw and great catch by Tet.

The second TD to Tet against Dallas where Bryce dips and turns his shoulder in to evade the pass rusher.  Resets and finds Tet in the end zone.

Dude embodies the Keep Pounding mantra.

Look I’m one of Bryce Young’s greatest critics.

But in 2003 Jake Delhomme threw 19 TDs and 16 Ints and barely got 3200 yards. We went to the Super Bowl and won 10 games by 1 score or less. And guess what, we wouldn’t have gotten there without Jake.

Maybe we don’t have a Newton this time, maybe we have a Delhomme who makes you cuss as much as you cheer. And honestly I don’t give a single damn if we have a Clausen as long as we are winning games.

My biggest gripe about Bryce is that we weren’t winning games, now we are winning games. Winning cures all. And if we start falling apart again then it’s  whatever and we should change whatever we need to so we can fix it, but right now something is working.

Winning ain't gonna make my eyes lie to me.

Context matters, and it will always matter in the game of football.
