ESPN REPORT: NY Giants to target Panthers DC Ejiro Evero for head coach position

We get a 3rd round pick if Evero gets a job next year as a HC.

It does not matter if he is under an expiring contract or not.  The rules are he has to be with the team for two years and there can't be a break in employment.

If he takes a year off and then signs as a HC, we get nothing.

If he gets a HC job next year we get a 3rd pick.  Full stop.

The average defense exceeds the sum of the parts we have given him to work with. Imagine average when your coming off the worst NFL defense and your leading sack getter is a rookie with 5.5 sacks.

He has been in the room for 3 years talking about the parts they ended up with, especially with HCs with their hands off the D.

He may not have been give the most expensive tallent, draft or free agency, but that D is full of his guys.

It was also the worst defense in his second year so that's on him too and he isn't getting a curve for that part for getting back to mediocre. He basically slightly improved from the D that Rhule/Wilks left 3 years ago to put it into perspective.

I feel like that draft officially solidified the fact that these "professionals" aren't some football geniuses that you should blindly trust like half the huddle wanted to believe at the time. Times have changed with the public access to digital and social media. Not to mention the trade up for XL last year that I don't think anyone on here wanted or expected lol. We could just do a huddle poll for every draft pick and do just as good as the FO minus some inside health info we don't have access to

It’s hard not to feel that way sometimes. I try to say I’m just an average slob and the pros at least have info/experience I don’t have but holy poo some of their decisions are awful sometimes.

I think it really depends on when his contract technically expires. If you look at the language, my interpretation of "any break in employment" would include ANY length of time. So, if he is no longer under employment here, that constitutes a break in continued employment with us.

It's actually a very interesting situation/question.

Yeah it is interesting. If contracts run through the league year that is March. Any HC will be hired well before.

I tend to think the common sense application of this would need the coach to be a loss to the team. If he isn’t signed for next year then we suffer no loss.

OTOH why institute something like this and be stingy with doling out the picks… the team did employ him as a DC for three seasons giving the platform to showcase his potential to move up.

Stuff like this is letter of the law territory. Plus, if you give an inch, you would open the door to a wide range of interpretations of what consists of a "break" of employment.

It's not something they should be generous with because the compensation is pretty generous. Two 3rd round picks is HUGE.

I mean he has a contract and that contract runs through a said date.  I would imagine its probably mid feb.  What would be the point of longer or shorter?

Yeah so what is the letter?
I disagree with the concept of it, I like to stick with merit. And remind people that I wanted Wilks… not trying to hold anyone back, just it is so much of a rigged game in coordinator market with that kind of payoff sitting there to tilt the scales in an even race. Competition.
But conceptually, if you are gonna take those kind of extreme measures you need to have a winner every now and then. Make it too hard to award those prizes, where is the incentive? If you are gonna do it set it up so some gets a payoff. I am not sure anyone has so far.
