49ers signed K Eddy Pineiro to a four-year, $17 million extension.

The deal includes $10 million in guaranteed money and ties Pineiro to San Francisco through the 2029 season. Kicking on a one-year deal in 2025, Pineiro converted all 22 attempts from inside 50 yards, also converting 6-of-7 attempts of 50 yards or more. His 96.6% conversion rate on 29 field goal attempts led the league, bringing stability to a position that long plagued the 49ers.

If you plan on making him a guard are you going to extend him when you don't know if he can play that position?

It makes no sense to try to rework a contract on a big man with this injury when you can just cut him and have all of the cap savings to use on your new rookie LOT and another position of need.

Can't save any money this year by cutting him. His salary is fully guaranteed and counts against the cap no matter what unless we do a minimal extension to spread the hit out. There's always the risk he doesn't play again and there's the possibility he does. It all depends on do we take the risk of spreading out the guaranteed money or just eat it all this year. Any extension is really just about cap management while seeing when/if he can recover.

This will be interesting as it plays out. 
 

We have the hard core cynics saying it’s done. Eat the money this year get a new LOT. (My initial reaction, not knocking it.). 

 
Then you have a couple of us open to paying a small amount in NFL terms to keep the option open and at the same time move some $ around.

Then you get to Marty Hurney. Which to me would be signing up to a new 3 year extension that pays him market price despite not having proof of what he will be. So we can save 8 million on the cap.

You eat by keeping him in the building, pushing him through a thorough rehabilitation process, and making that a 17 million dollar investment.  If Icky isn't grinding the ENTIRE time, you know he's not an investment for the future.  If he kills it during his rehab, you may have a solid guard at a discount price for at least one season.  It may not be a career killer, Jack Conklin returned.  Didn't Slater from LAC tear his too?

Remember when an Achilles tear was a career ending injury?  Jimmy and Joes like us, would never be the same, but Icky is a 1% athlete regardless of how much crap a message board gives him.

 But like LAC, you draft a back-up plan early.

I'm a little worried that we haven't created any real cap space yet. Plenty of restructures we can do to create significant cap room + releasing A'Shawn Robinson.

Makes me think maybe we won't be as active as many of us would like/expect.

But who knows; just because we haven't heard yet doesn't mean the wheels aren't turning behind the scenes.

Please take note both Kyler and Tua were in the same place where Bryce is now when they got their extensions.  Both were high first round QBs that had flashed some, but hadn't put it all together before being offered that second contract.  The Dolphins and Cardinals will be eating a sh!t ton of dead cap just to move on from their respective 'franchise QB.'  Also note, both teams were leery of the extension, but did it anyway because each team thought the QB simply needed more time to put it all together despite their reservations. In each case it backfired spectacularly.

I agree with you, the parallels are there. Bryce seems a little more put together in the head space than Kyler or Tua, but physically they are all undersized and physically limited QBs. Bryce isn't a slam dunk player to extend. I really hope the Panthers don't end up making a very expensive mistake.
