Panthers signing WR John Metchie

Recommended Posts

Contract may tell the story on whether or not we have plans for him to make the team, but we're quickly losing space in the #4/5 WR spot.

XL *should* be the #3. But he's just as likely to be shipped out if Dan can give up on him. Might already be out the door come draft day.

Horn *should* make the team, but I don't know if the staff actually values him. I'd be pissed if they gave up on him this quick, but dunno.

Moore and Tremayne just seem like locks based on the coaching staff, special teams, etc.

Without throwing a draft pick or UDFA camp stud into the mix, I think XL, Horn, and Metchie are fighting for the last roster spot/jersey on game days.

Don't worry, Bryce's safety net is TMac.

I'd hope so.

And before someone says it, this is NOT me concerned about someone stealing catches from my guy, lol.  I'm just afraid of Bryce falling into old habits and it hindering his performance in such a critical season for him and the franchise.

If Metchie had been better so far in his career, I'd be jumping for joy over this move, as I'd been calling for it going into both his rookie and 2nd season to try and trade for him.

Honestly, is he even any better than Horn Jr?

I'd have liked a clear upgrade over Horn Jr if we weren't going to be giving him first crack at that slot role.

You guys are overthinking this. John Metchie is just a depth piece, He here to create competition for XL, Jimmy Horn Jr., and David Moore. The team isn't going to hold off on making other receiver moves just because Metchie is on the roster.

Moore is a special teamer outside of injuries above him and there is zero reason to bring in a depth piece who MIGHT create competition for XL and Horn Jr.

Either bring in someone clearly better than them to replace them, or you roll with the guys on rookie contracts and see if they can become a useful player.

If you wanted depth who MIGHT turn into competition for those guys, then draft someone somewhere in Rounds 3-5, as that's a great spot to find those quick twitch slot WRs.

Just don't love depth signings who have a history with our QB when we have 5 WRs who are already all but on the 53 man roster unless they get traded (like XL).

Good move for the WR room. If we manage to add one of Njoku or Goedert at TE that should close the door on any excuses for our passing offense. Get in the damn end zone.

Yeah I think if they get a TE, they'll spend most of the draft bolstering the trenches and then we will have a roster that ain't half bad.

Just sucks the biggest question mark is at the most important position

Lol seriously I couldn’t believe the first handful of replies

Metchie isn’t even guaranteed a roster spot. He’ll be battling with Horn and Moore during camp

    • He does have speed. 21+ top end speed is very fast for a linebacker and his 3 cone drill time is considered excellent, close to elite.
    • This is awesome because you get to see the perspectives of the scouts--get a glimpse behind the curtain. I wonder whose doing this was; I am curious as to why David Tepper allowed it. Maybe it was his wife. Maybe Dan.  At least from my perspective--and probably one shared by other fans--when David Tepper bought the team, he closed everything off too much to the fans, and really didn't give an explanation. Things were obviously done because he (and/or some others wanted to do it). Remember when they used the guise of construction and all that to keep fans from seeing the team during practice? I know there are laws and safety and all that, but Tepper could've made it happen. And, of course, we all know that they essentially fired Jeremy from his independent contractor gig as a photojournalist. I never understood why they'd do that (and the negative reverberations obviously affected Jeremy and ultimately this place--i.e, us fans). The pie was (and is) certainly big enough to throw some scraps to the independents. I realize that you can't necessarily open the floodgates, but a few different perspectives from indy journalists whether in word or photos is a good thing in my mind.  So, it's great to see different perspectives. I will say this however: it is not without risk, as you know there will be some buster who will be calling the scouts out if the players flop. I think we should all keep in mind that the buck stops with the GM. It's nice to have one, however, that is so convicted in his people and process--and ultimately success, that he's willing to give fans access to this type of information. Pass this on to Tepper.
    • I hope he ends up being our best ever at the position. Ryan Kalil left big shoes behind that we haven't quite been able to fill since.
