Is AJ Dillon just a camp body?

He is only 27 and has pretty good size. More a pounder then a speedster. What's the opinion on this guy?

He might not make the team but they brought him in to genuinely give him a shot. Camp bodies are players you never heard of and dont even know they are on the roster.

Personally, I don't think so.  Here is why:

Blocking--our T situation could need help.  A 245 lb back can help.

If we keep a RB in to block and release, we are able to release a TE without chipping the speed rusher more.  It sure seems as if we are going to address a pass-catching TE.

Short yardage.

You don't sign former 2nd round picks in March as "camp bodies"

Most "camp bodies" come in the form of undrafted free agents

Like Montrell Johnson and Anthony Tyus who are both RBs on the roster at the moment

There's no logical reason to think he is.  We do this every season.  We bring in a mid-tier back to compete and be a spell for Chuba.  If Jonathan Brooks can stay healthy I could see AJ Dillon riding the pines, but I still think they will keep him on the team.

That's entirely up to AJ Dillon.

He is here because Young cant get 1 yard when needed.  Its sad that we need to keep an extra back just for that reason, but here we are

Dillon is an insurance policy if Brooks doesn't play well or can't stay healthy.  Panthers don't seem ready to rely on Etienne for any meaningful touches yet.

He's 245lbs and ran a 4.5 at the combine several years ago. You can't teach size or speed so he's got those things going for him. If he has a decent work ethic and the coaches have a plan for him, he should be more than a camp body.
