Brandon Lafell - Ooh Wee Mayne

There isn't a more frustrating player for Panthers fans than Brandon "Donald" Lafell. One week he looks like a rookie, the next an accomplished veteran.

 

Against the Saints, Lafell had a less than lackluster performance (to put it nicely). Not only was he not catching balls, but he was missing blocks. Missing blocks is inexcusable for a receiver of his size.

 

Apparently, Lafell knew he needed to redeem himself. Notice his role in the Deangelo Williams screen pass. Without Lafell's block on the 20 yard line Deangelo would not have had a touchdown. With the Panthers red zone scoring at a near season low, this was a crucial play that has gone overlooked.

Judging his play against the Jets you could tell he REALLY wanted to make up for the Saints disappointing performance. I have a feeling that motivation will runover into this weekend.

I watched this play, specifically the block, about 5 times when I rewatched the game yesterday. It was a great block. Plus It also disrupted the line that Ed Reed took towards D-Will, too. It absolutely turned this great play into a TD.

The best parallel I can think of:

 

We should keep him and use him like the Eagles have done with Jason Avant.  

 

He's a solid WR4-5 to have depending on who else we get this upcoming offseason.

I think him still growing as a player in this league contributes to his inconsistencies.

I hope to see him resigned at a friendly price and continue to grow with Cam. They seem to have good chemistry.

Lafell would make a great #3, but he's really just a 4 tops more likely a 5-6 guy with a low ceiling. But the guy can ball except for when he doesn't and we should probably stash him on the practice squad to see if he can develope. But yeah Go Lafell!!

People are way too hard on LaFell. He's not likely ever going to be a #1 wideout but you could do much worse at #2 and would have to be fortunate to do better. Hell, people were ready to throw money at Nicks last year and he'd be happy to have LaFell's production this season.

Offensive coordinator Mike Shula called LaFell a real “football player” for not only his athletic prowess and receiving ability but also his knowledge of the game. Wide receivers coach Ricky Proehl said that as a No. 2 receiver, LaFell is asked to do some of the dirty work while pass-catchers Smith and Olsen get the targets.
