Flipside of G'man's Faith in Cam = Derek Anderson is gone. Definitely.

interesting point.

at the same time, having a backup that can win you games is important in cases like rogers or cutler where they still come back to play after a couple weeks of being injured. the last thing you want is to miss the playoffs because your starter got injured for three weeks and the backup threw sixteen thousand interceptions because he's cheap and plays like it.

Cam is used like a FB and doesn't wear a mouth piece.

We need to pay a backup vet QB that can handle starting a couple games

U need to use your starting QB for what he was hired to do. If Cam is being used as a FB because this team enjoys paying players for roles they can"t fulfill, then what other role will Andersen play besides QB if Cam goes down?

You can cut that number in half by having a mid-round rookie instead.

He gets paid $840,000 but his cap hit is only $555,000 due to the minimum salary benefit. This was set up in order to entice teams to sign vets for the vet minimum instead of just signing a bunch of UDFAs and younger players off the wire. So while they have to pay the player whatever their vet minimum is ($840,500 for DA), the cap hit is that of the minimum vet minimum (if that makes sense) of $555,000.

That said, you still could find a rookie for even cheaper. But at that amount I question whether it's even worth it. I do think we should bring in a young guy to eventually be the backup, but for now I'd rather stick with DA.

QFT and because this is the only answer. Seems a lot of Huddlers should do some more reading on the salary cap. With a cap hit of 555k, DA is an absolute steal when you consider the veteran experience he brings to the position and the QB room. Cam's stated multiple times how much he's leaned on DA for insight. Sure, you could probably find a rookie in the 5th round and he'd come in around 400k, but really, how much closer is 150k more in cap space going to get us to resigning our key guys or bringing in quality free agents? Don't think too hard because the answer is not much. I'll pay 150k for a guy who still adds value to the team over a no-chance-in-hell rookie everyday of the week.

This is a really good point and I've never even heard of this.

Just some qualities we would need in a backup QB in order for them to hold down the fort if Cam got hurt.

-Be our best RB

-Be able to pick up third and longs with his legs

-Buy time in the pocket so the WR's can get open

-Bail out OL

-Bail out Shula

You all saw how well Matt Moore and Pickles did with a similar offense. If anything it was better because alot of these guys were younger. I don't think we should waste a pick on a QB. If DA wants to stay for vet minimum I'm all for it. There's not many starting QB's that could come in and save us from losing if Cam had to miss a few games.

Eeeehhh, I'm not dead certain of that. I'll grant it's possible.

I'd say it's still a good idea to have that 'veteran mentor' around. Cam's still young.

Could always go for Josh McCown if he doesn't retire, but I figure Anderson would be cheaper.

Right now, Cam has just as much of game time experience as Derek Anderson, I don't think Cam needs a babysitter anymore.

    • Hello, soccer fans [crickets, tumbleweed flies by]. The World Cup kicks off in less than 2 weeks and, well, 🇺🇸USA USA USA🇺🇸 and all. We beat Senegal 3-2 yesterday in a tune-up friendly at BoA, with Christian Pulisic finally entering the scoring column.  How will we do in the World Cup once our tournament kicks off on the 12th? Well, there are 48 teams (assuming Iran is there) and it feels like one of two thing happens: we get grouped for the first time since '98, or we make it to the Round of 16 for the third time in the last four World Cups. I tried out the lottery for an Atlanta game and struck out, so yesterday was as World Cup as I'll get for in-person ($285/ticket for like Norway vs $39/ticket for USMNT right beforehand was a layup).  The U.S. has a travel-heavy schedule in group play, playing in LA, Seattle and LA. Real road warrior mentality being built. Glad the east coast gets worse kickoff times for a NA World Cup than a Qatar World Cup.
    • Well, that's the thing. Drafting players only for their physical measurables as you are suggesting only really happened during 2024, and X unfortunately has become the poster child for that. To be clear, it's not necessarily about drafting RAS over skill, but RAS over NFL-readiness and/or a solid body of work. Lots of players show skill in college, but those skills don't necessarily translate to the NFL for a multitude of reasons. But, getting back to the main point, to be clear, I believe that our FO is still enamored with physical gifts (who wouldn't be?), but now they're letting Dr. Eric Eager's proprietary system--his "secret sauce" prioritize the players that the Panthers draft, and it seems like it weighs not only a solid body of work, relative to a college career of course, but consistent gradual improvement as evidenced by production pretty highly.
    • Its a good article about how pathetically bad our past drafts ('23 and '24) have been. Building the team in '23 since we weren't ready yet and taking your qb in '24 made so much more sense in hindsight. Ladd McConkey over XL is pretty much a given but not sure it does as much to change Bryce's trajectory as the author suggests.  As bad as '23 and '24 drafts were, the '25 and '26 really give me hope.
