Bill Voth on Steve Smith's Situation. Basically, It Isn't Over.

Didn't see this posted, but it's something else I was saying earlier when this mess started. Steve's contract was set up to end or be renegotiated this off season. He was never meant to see the money in the 2014, 2015 and 2016 seasons.

Basically the option/non exercise fee is a poison pill that will end the contract either by a cut or renegotiated contract.

If Steve didn't catch that 4th down catch @ Mia, we are 2nd in the NF c South. Stop this fugin bullshit. How bout we use our brain and get a #1 or #2 and let smitty play in the slot where he belongs

Love 89, but if not for his key drops in the first half against Arizona we may have a commanding lead at half and win that game. Devil's Advocate.

not saying he is perfect. That doesn't mean he is done. He is far from done. the only thing that could hold him back is durability but even in the playoff game he made a great catch to score the only TD against SF with a sore knee.Dude can still play and still play at a high level. The rumors of his demise are greatly exaggerated. He is a gamer and that is what we still need.

Well since my name is Dave, and I have some grey hair, I feel like I've got great insight to our GM... Not at all!

Instead I will say, for me, it comes down to who else is on contract to catch passes besides Olsen and the RBs? So if we cut Smith for cap or leadership reasons, where's the replacement? Cap wise, it's at best $1.5 million, which is fairly insignificant. Cam can build raport with another WR. But we will need the guy to be able to make plays at the end of the game.

Smitty isn't the game breaker he once was, but he's still a clutch player for us. That is my primary concern for replacing Smith.

Personally, I still love 89. I want him on my team until he's ready to retire.

Big Cat won't let Smitty go anywhere. I feel this is all just offseason silly talk. Sent from the Carolina Huddle App
I use to think this too but now I'm not so sure. I do believe that it will take the Big Cat to get this smoothed over however with Steve. If it comes down to SS and what's best for the team then Jerry will be the one to break it to Steve. Sent from my SCH-I535 using CarolinaHuddle mobile app

Better players than 89 with bigger impacts on the sport have been let go.....

89 brings a lot to the table and not all is positive....he is entering the stage of his career where his negatives become a bigger issues bc he isn't as important. His talent finally is replaceable.

Smitty was an awesome panther but he isn't worth the money. Why should we keep him? He has seriously decline, despite his firecracker attitude which seems to cover up that fact.

Panther fans are teh worst at attaching themselves to players. Get over it, this is a buisness, and I'd ratehr see my team win than be stuck overpaying a player, ANY player.

He also makes a good point about the locker room.  He says Smitty IS THE PANTHER, for a lack of a better term, and with him in the locker room, it kind of smothers Luke and Cam from becoming the complete leaders of the team they should be.

if I had to write a story, I'd play this hand..  But if I were someone actually following the Panthers, I wouldn't set up Smitty like he's the Jordan Gross of leadership.  We can only speculate, but Smitty sets a tone of winner takes all, however not exactly that leader who would be a Ray Lewis who is speaking for the team in all situations.  There is plenty of room for Cam and Luke to grow...
