How many more times will Philly Brown muff a punt before he's pulled?

Im very serious about this, can we just not put anyone back there at all to catch punts and just let the ball end up wherever it ends up? You know its bad when you cringe after stopping an offense knowing that Brown is a huge wild card back there when they have to punt. Sure he had that one TD, but frankly the bad outweighs the good for us on punt returns. I wouldnt put anyone back there at all and just let the ball land where it lands.

The punt return had nothing to do with Brown's ability. It was a busted play and he was in the right place at the right time. He struggles reading the ball on the way down and he is rarely underneath it when he needs to be. Every catch is like OMG OMG!!Next year's draft should include a special teams ace/offensive speedster..

Just my $.02

Philly backers can get antsy all they want. But dude makes my stomach hurt every time he is back there. For some reason he can never make a clean catch of the ball.

Plain and simple we get a 3 and out then we have to stress about being able to not turn the ball over.

Devin Hester had 8 fumbles his rookie year. 8. Philly Brown has had 2 fumbles in 5 games. Rookies fumble. You don't just scrap their careers after 2 fumbles or you'll have a constant revolving door of non-developing players.

There is a big difference between Hester and Brown.

My expectation for Hester during his golden days ---> TD

My expectation for Philly Brown ---> Catch the ball and/or get back to the 20 yd lane

Comparing how much they fumble is stupid. Hester takes more chances and gets a ton of yds returning balls with a chance to score on every return. Brown is basically your below avg returner who basically gets you 5-10yds on punts and he MIGHT get you back to the 20 yd line on kickoff returns.

Brown at this point is your Chris Gamble/ Armanti Edwards returner with a higher chance to cough up the ball.

I'm not saying all this but it is crazy to compare Hester to Brown on return skills. Imo Hester gave Bears fans hope that he might score every time he was back there. He even had teams game planning on not kicking the ball to him (which helped on Field position) most of the time.

With Philly I just hope he can cleanly catch the ball and not give the ball back to the other team. I don't even care right now if he can get any yards. Just catch the ball.

I doubt they had that expectation 5 games into his career.   A quick look at the stats says that after 5 games, Hester had one td and 3 or 4 fumbles.  I imagine Bears fans were making comments about him similar to those being made about Philly Brown.

The point though is not to say that Brown is the next Devin Hester, but simply to point out that Brown is likely to get some leeway from the coaches since he has the potential to be a good punt returner, once he gets a little experience.  Developing a good punt returner could pay significant dividends in the future.

Not saying they are even close to the same but...Devin Hester fumbled 8 times his rookie year and lost 2. 6 fumbles were on PR and 2 were on KO. His second year he fumbled 7 times. 5 on PR and 2 on KO.

To date Philly Brown is 6th in the NFL in PR Average and has 2 fumbles. Ted Ginn and Devin Hester both have 1 each.

They have the same punt return average for this point in their careers. It's not crazy to compare them at all, they're the same in all stats except Hester had more fumbles.

Return men aren't groomed and made in the NFL. They either are return men or aren't.

Do they fumble? Yes. Nature of the beast.

Philly Brown consistantly struggles fielding balls. Any ball. That makes him not a returner. Simple and plain

Well that maybe true but Brown is no one in the same ball park as Hester. You can get any Vet free agent who doesn't have a problem fielding the ball and get the same results.

Basically what I am saying is why put a rookie in their in the first place if he doesn't have a high ceiling. Hester was a 2nd rd pick who was picked specifically to return punts/kickoffs. Brown may have cost us a game already and he may cost us another one in the future.
