special teams is one of those things that nobody cares about or pays attention to unless a unit is insanely overpowered or just comically terrible.  but it's still important and still something that cost us games in 2014.

 

"Comically terrible" is a pretty good description for our ST last season.

i had fun watching special teams in 2013. i got legitimately excited every time dickbag teams had to punt to use because we had teddy back there to make some plays and we were gonna spring a few key blocks.

 

then it was 2014 and every return was benton braxter doing cartwheels over top of a bouncing ball inside the ten and fair catching it with his elbows and by the time we made the playoffs i was crawling under the couch every time we forced a stop.

 

2015 should be much more like 2013.

Ginn returning kicks over Bersin makes us go from 32nd overall to at least high teens.

The rest is icing on the cake.

That seems high.

Werent we also one of the very worst in the NFL at covering kicks too....

How comically bad Bersin was kinda takes some attention away from how simply and unspectacular we just sucked in the other phases too IMO

I'm not so sure Boykin even makes the team (although other signings have been directly for ST help so it's not all a lunch pin with this Boykin signing). I said this in the Boykin thread:

 

I think with so many 2 yr deals we signed guys to this offseason, Boykin's one year deal hints strongly at the idea that, regardless of what is said publicly, he is here to compete for any spot. Not even a lock for ST. That's not to say I don't think he'll make it. I have no idea but I love giving him a try. I don't think it affects our offer for Jennings in the slightest. Unless of course we just used some money from the Jennings proposal to sign Boykins...but I doubt that.

 

The point is the 1 yr signing. Fozzy and others got 2 years. Thos guys we expect to make it out of camp. The 1 yr signings? That's a maybe. In my never to be humble opinion. But I sure do hope the best guys make it and ball like crazy.

I know this thread was meant as sarcasm, but I'm happy that they're addressing a major area of weakness we had last year. Special teams are a huge part of a game with a team that likes to play ball control. In 2013, Ginn did a pretty decent job at setting us up in good field position to start our drives.

 

Never forget the blonde hair flapping in the breeze as Bersin went down to one knee hoping to secure a punt.

Steelers game, Vikings, Bengals are all games where our special teams were just awful that impacted the game where we could have won. Now, instead of 7-8-1, we could have potentially been 10-6. Special teams is a very overlooked aspect of the game.
