Cam will have to get better bc Defense will get worse

Before I even read this article, I just want to say, the defense doesn't have to suffer.

The reason teams with top paid qbs allow their defense to suffer, is cause the front office either gets away from drafting defensive players, or fail to draft quality defensive players.

Theee is no reason that the defense has to drop off. If Gettleman continues to draft the way he does (why would he change?), then i don't see the defense dropping off except cayse if injuries.

As others have said, our cap situation is much better than most teams.  Plus how many playoff teams started 6 rookies on cheap contracts and the team improved??  Those guys will be here for 2 or 3 years under very cheap contracts.  If you look at the stats alone the case can be made we are back when losing late or when trailing etc.  But like any stats you have to look at the context.  For example early last season our defense was pretty bad as was our offense but when everyone got healthy and the rookies had experience in the system we improved drastically.  We started off slow in past years often due to fruit basket turnover on both units.  I don't think you can compare the future to the past given that we now have a more stable roster with guys experienced in our system. We have few cap problems and our drafts have given us a bunch of talented players who are cheap.

I dont think the arguments are valid because the stats while accurate don't represent our potential going forward.  Honestly I think 2013 and our results are a fair indication of at least our potential this year recognizing that we could swing anywhere in between 9-7 and 13-3 this year given most games are decided by less than a half dozen plays either going your way or against you.

A couple of things, the first stat has no weight for pace, since we played at a slow place it was not as often as other teams to score 21 or more points against us in a game, thusly we didn't give up 21 points very often, especially after 2011 when our defense was horrid.

10 of those 31 games cited came in 2011, and 9 of those games the opposition scored 28+ points, and in 8 we gave up 30+ points.

So yeah, having the worst defense in the league his rookie year padded those bad stats

Lets see, he uses "trailing when entering the 4th quarter" as a stat.  Ummmmm wouldn't it be more prudent to just go with 4th Quarter comebacks or Game Winning Drives??  Why punish a guy if the team loses a 4th quarter lead and then has less time to actually complete said comeback?   Perhaps because over the last 2 seasons Cam has been among the tops in the league in those.

Last season Cam was tied for 3rd in the league in 4th quarter comebacks with 3 (despite missing two games).  In 2013 he was tied for 2nd with 4

Last season Cam had 2 game winning drives and in 2013 he was tied for 2nd most in the league with 4.

Over the last two years he is among the tippy top of 4th quarter comebacks and GWDs

So like I said this is the definition of cherry picked stats that fall apart under further scrutiny

So basically you can't have "the best" player at every position. Check. I think the deal is manageable from a cap standpoint and gives us freedom to sign key players. Is everyone going to resign that we want? No. But that does not mean you can't spread the cap and have success. Also, ANY JOURNALIST WHO THINKS HE NEEDS TO USE ALL CAPS TO DRIVE HOME A POINT needs to go back to journalism school.

a substantial amount of the gauranteed money is going to be paid this season so that Cam's cap-hit over the remaining years is not as bad... This will also give us a good oppertunity to restructure the deal n later years because most of the guaranteed money will be paid up by 2017.

This was a good contract for Cam Newton and he Panthers organization.

edit: The cap hit is actually spread out pretty evenly so I wanted to correct my post. Still it is not a bad contract and very manageable.

Cap is going to go up every year and we just got a deal done for the highest paid position, from now on everything is going to fall in line like clock work.

Its Superbowl every year!
