This just in - Thursday Night games aren't good for NFL teams..

Their initial research uncovered some interesting data. Over a five-year period from 2009-13 the average winning percentage for teams against extra rested opponents (teams coming off an open date or Thursday game) was four percentage points lower than when on normal rest.

From 2002 (the first year of the current eight-division format) until 2014, research uncovered big discrepancies in the number of games some teams had to play against extra rested teams. For example, the Bills had to play 29 such games, more than twice as many as the Cincinnati Bengals, which had the fewest such games (12).

So a grad student has decided to look at Thursday games and what effect they have on the teams that play in them. 4 percentage points doesn't sound like much, but when teams miss the playoffs by half a game sometimes its a pretty huge deal. 

 

Personally, I wouldn't mind getting rid of all Thursday night games all together. Football is meant for Sundays and the occasional Monday night. Thursday nights just don't belong.

I love Thursday night NFL games.   That means no more than 2 nights without an NFL game.  If it's a good College game, or here in Atlanta a good JV game then I have the option not to watch.  But more times than not, it's an excuse to fire up the HD projector , BBQ some wings and drink whatever beer was left from Monday/Sunday.

      I've shown you numerous comps for other tackles in the same age and talent range.  His contract, taking into account his age, health, etc.  is the going rate.  It's a fair deal. I've shown you examples of how long it usually takes to find even an average replacement.  Hell, look at every tackle that has ever started for the Panthers.  How many would you consider a success?  They are not easy to find. After everything we've done with this team since drafting Bryce why would we decide to let our best linemen go and add a huge question mark at tackle?   FA is a crapshoot in which any guy available will have cons/issues.  If not, they'll cost a fortune.   Outside of a first or maybe 2nd round pic next year it'll take a few years for a tackle to learn the position at the NFL level.  There are still questions about Icky. Every vet NFL player deals with maintenance.  Between the contract value and history I'm not overly worried about his knee.  I contend his knee issue isn't anything to be overly worried about.  It's not zero risk but it's an acceptable risk.  Every player we draft and every contract we sign has risk.  You're blowing up his own negative words about his knees and ignoring him saying he is healthy and the knee is a non issue.  You have a strong chicken little complex with this team.  Being he has always been a Panther they are very aware of any health issues. We paid now because now is cheaper.  If his knee was really an issue they would have waited.  That tells me it's not the issue you want it to be.
