Funchess Learning From Proehl

During team drills today, Devin Funchess was struggling to get separation on routes in the corner of the end zone. When matched up against CB Carrington Byndom, Funchess was unable to make the play. 

Afterwards, Ricky Proehl pulled Funchess aside and gave him a little one on one coaching. Proehl used his elbow and forearm on Funchess to demonstrate a push off that will not draw a flag. Proehl's arm never extended (an extended arm on a receiver will usually draw a flag). Instead, there were quick sharp jabs with the forearm, enough to set a corner back off balance just enough to make a play.

I have said it once, and I will continue saying it. Ricky Proehl is a real asset to the Carolina Panthers. You will not find a more hands on and knowledgeable wide receivers coach in the NFL. It is this type of coaching of the minor but important details of the position that sets him apart.

He'll get it.  He aint going to be a seasoned vet right off the bat. Smart kid, he'll get it. 

yeah everyone is expecting him to be Benjamin 2.0 and thats just unreasonable. Physically, yes, they are similar. but everyone progresses at different rates, and Benjamin surprised everyone in his rookie camp. just give Funchess some time. He is playing like the second round pick that he was at the moment. 

How soon can we fire Shula and promote Proehl to OC? 

my gut was like "YEAH!!!!"... but in all seriousness, how do we know that Proehl would make a good OC. seems to me that OC doesnt naturally flow from WR coach. though... i guess OC doesnt flow from QB coach either..........

I have no idea if he will be a good OC, but we know Shula is not a good OC, so we have to try something new.

      In that case its in his best interest to fully recover.  We are in a much better situation to judge his condition. It would be more risky for another team to throw money at him.  Taking a reasonable deal from us seems the most likely outcome if he is on track to return.

      Looks like we're fifth in running plays/play action plays when in the lead and about 10th in the league when we fall behind.  The biggest thing I take from this is not that we drop off like that, because every team does, but that we drop off so much. A lot of the best teams don't  drop off much, depending on the game situation, preferring to stick to their game plan through out. Some of those are very good teams. Baltimore barely deviates from their run/action heavy plan. At the other end, KC also barely deviates, but they have one of the least run oriented attacks in the league by these stats. On the other side, there are teams that make even bigger shifts (based on last year's performance) and they are teams that for various reasons found themselves in desperation attempts. Dallas, Atlanta, the Browns, Bucs and Bengals were all literally throwing out their game plans and trying to either lean on their top end QB or were just frantically trying to create something downfield. Considering the years of us completely abandoning the run (oh those Matt Rhule days), maybe we are starting to stabilize. Don't even get me started on the Reich days...
