Norman Contract Talks Stall per Person

top dawg

Recommended Posts

Josh Norman turns 28 this season and has about 1/2 a season worth of elite play on his resume. The other 3 1/2 years were mediocre, and that's being nice.

I understand him wanting to get paid, at his age he's only got one shot at a big payday. I also understand the team not ready or willing to pay up.

He'll be the next Mike Michell. The Huddle is gonna freak out when DG doesn't give him the absurd contract some deparate team does, then he'll play like crap without an elite front 7.

6-7 mil per for 3-years, then he can go as we will have drafted his replacement and then some...then will be time to pay Ealy, KK, Star, Shaq and KB.

D.G believes that a top notch front seven is the guts of a defense and the secondary plays to that strength. That tells the story right there. He has a money value on each position and believes an adequate secondary can do the job. Norman may have to go elsewhere to get top money.

Front seven is not gonna win you every single game much less a superbowl, you need at at least one elite guy in the secondary that can cover and make plays. Truth of the matter is its real easy to praise the front 7 when you are watching games because thats all you see on defense, not the DBs locking the receivers down field forcing the Qbs to hold the ball a little longer. Our pass rush has gotten relatively worse not better, Norman was more important last year than people think. We need to keep Josh.

Josh could go out there and have the best CB season of all time but he wouldn't get DG to pay him top 5 CB money next season.  That basically means hes playing for a contract with another team so I guess this will be his last year here unless he reigns in his expectations because Dave isn't paying anybody in the secondary 10+ million a year.  I think Dave would go as high as maybe 7-8 but it sounds like Josh has stars in his eyes with all this big talk and will be insulted at such a meager offer.

I am thinking that this age thing is overblown. I feel that a great corner just ages kind of like fine wine. Sure he may not be as fast,  but his knowledge at the position still makes him very effective and dangerous.  Kind of like a Charles Woodson. The best CBs are students of the game.  They know the positions (both sides and the slot) and the receivers.  I am not so sure that Josh Norman is as wise, shrewd and analytical at the position that it takes to get paid top money.  And I already talked about his inconsistency.

Here is an article by Graceland discussing some of the league's best:

A solid front 7 can make an average secondary look great (see Carolina 2013) but a greay CB won't do the same for a mediocre front 7, and we know Gettleman has and will invest there.  He will pay Josh a fair rate if he continues to perform, but won't overpay based on his valuation. For better or worse Gettleman will set his price after this season and Josh will take it or leave it.

I have to disagree with what I think your point is there.  Seattle is the perfect example.  Their front 7 is pretty ordinary outside of Wagner.  Their secondary makes them look much better.

meh. I think the Seahawks have a great front 7, they have only gone downhill since winning the superbowl though. Id love to have a bruce irving or micheal bennett on our team. I think Dave will surly go DE in next years first round.

    • So the last guy who had the job got hired by his former team directly into a role he has no direct experience in?
    • Hard to pass up millions for a couple of days work per week for a coaching gig in the NFL that is 60-80 hours each week during the season and a more relaxed 50 hours a week during the off season. Yeah, I'd love to see him as our DC but hard to see him giving up the cushy job there if he gets it. And he's going to be a great commentator for the network.
    • Really, I think that is where negotiations come in. If you've got a QB getting you to 10 wins but statistically he's not a great performer, then you say look you can take $22 million or you can try it on the market. Because let's face it, out there, any leadership skills that we're seeing aren't going to be on the table, it's just going to be performance and that lands him in the QB2 market, which is much, much less lucrative (although any of us would love that money).  No one is saying that Bryce will be a $50 million QB, barring something short of a miraculous jump. I'm just saying that if we are winning somehow with him at the helm, then it would be fuging stupid to dive back into the rookie pool all over again. Let's say we do hit the 10 win mark, heck, let's call it 11 and a second round in the playoffs. I think we can all say that would be a really uplifting result and one that should be doable if we have good play. What do we do then? Here's what I would offer if I were Morgan and Tepper. $25 million a year for 3 years, each year with up to $10 million in incentives for touchdowns, wins, playoff depth, being under 10 interceptions, completing a full season, passing yardage milestones, taking less than 15 sacks. Look, Bryce isn't a Ferrari, he isn't a Corvette, or a mid-level BMW. He's probably a new Toyota Sienna that will definitely get you somewhere and bring the whole team along with it, no fuss but not a lot of pizazz.  And really, it's about the destination, not about what drove you there.
