Jared Allen wanted to come HERE

top dawg

According to David Newton, the "Panthers were clear no. 1 choice for DE Jared Allen".  The NFL's leading active sack leader wanted to become a Panther.

I don't know about y'all, but this is great news, as you only have to look at the recent vids (links in the other thread) and realize that Allen was only playing 57 percent of the snaps to come to the conclusion that Allen is willing and able to come here and make a valuable contribution immediately.  This is a future HOFER that has something left in the tank and probably a little chip on his shoulder after hearing all the whispers that he is done!

Coach Ron Rivera hasn’t spoken on whether Allen will replace Johnson on the left side for Sunday’s game at Tampa Bay or remain on the right side where he has played most of his career.

Harris is confident his client can do either, noting Allen typically is “the smartest guy on the field at any time in the game, maybe with the exception of the quarterback."

Smart, motivated, and a track record. You can question whether or not he's gassed out if you want to, but I am fairly sure that he's gonna hit the ground---and the QB---running.

jared allen knows he's coming to a line that's dominated in the interior by two guys who can demand two blockers in any given situation. this leaves him more opportunities to fight through a single blocker, something that might not happen if he ended up somewhere with subpar talent.

toss in an upward-trending quarterback talent and a slowly-gelling offense and it's little surprise.

From the article...

Harris is confident his client can do either, noting Allen typically is “the smartest guy on the field at any time in the game, maybe with the exception of the quarterback."

Harris said Carolina may be the exception to that with middle linebacker Luke Kuechly, a two-time Pro Bowler who has missed the past two and a half games with a concussion.

    • yeah, now it's going to get awkward.  The team circles pay attention to all this stuff.  All the wives and girlfriends see the posts.  They all talk like everyone.  Football is just a normal world outside of the fact they play a game for lots of money.  Gossip travels. They know the Theilen's want out at this point.  Carolina is now the disappointed failed trade location.    So now AT takes sort of an inhouse hit in Carolina IMO
    • Ummm... The dude looked like he was about 180 pounds soaking wet with us (I don't care what his listed weight was/is) - he would have been destroyed in the run game even more than our current and past crappy ILBs. The problem is we primarily play 3-4 or nickel/dime - there is little room on the field for him because he isnt an edge LB blitzer and he can't cover for crap. The only thing he can do kind of well is be an in-the-box safety that can try and beat blockers to the spot because of his athleticism. Washington was able to make him work last year because they used him solely as an in-the-box safety and almost exclusively ran a single high FS. The funny thing is they had good yards/game stats against the pass despite most of their secondary having embarrassingly low PFF grades. Washington was also terrible against the run, which might explain why they gave up so few yards passing.
    • Just get the deal done. We've teased it so much that the Thielen's expect it. Now we run the risk of our veteran WR locker room presence becoming disgruntled. Just take what we can get, make him happy, and get future assets while freeing up snaps for guys who will be here beyond this season.
