Brandon Williams and Marcus Lucas both looked better than Dickson in preseason this year , but we cut them.

Against backups though. It's really hard to compare preseason performances when the level of competition is so much different.

My guess is that it came down to Dickson's body of work being better than the few plays Swoll and Marcus Lucas made in a preseason game.

Usually, the teams that win in the NFL are the ones that dont beat themselves.  Something to consider when you are wondering why we cut some guys that made a few splash plays.

Ed will probably make a few important catches this weekend and this thread will be bumped - careful what you say. Dickinson isn't as useless as made out to be.

That's for sure he "might" have a important Pass catch

but I'll guarantee he'll miss a run block. You can bet the house on it.

He has not been good this year. Brandon Williams was a good STs player and I'm sure given the chance he could have missed just as many blocks as Dickson does.

Sad thing is this staff also kept Brockel over Lucas and Williams.

But thank goodness for Olsen. We still 8-0!

And to think we let Barnidge just slip away in the night.

The 30-year-old who has 1200 yards in his career? Who had < 300 yards in his previous two seasons with the Browns? Roster spots are limited. If you hold a stock and it doubles after 5 years but while waiting you could have invested in another that tripled in 2, where does that leave you? Better off than you started, but not where you could have been.

Good for him putting it together. Good for us not waiting.

He had a whopping 320 yards, and 1 touchdown through four seasons when he left us.

Barnidge wasn't exactly a pro bowler when we let him "slip away".

Also..he was injured and seemingly had more games on IR than in yhe regular season. He always had pass catching talent...could never get it to work out here.

Well, in fairness John Fox was his coach 3 of his 4 years with us.  No tight ends had good receiving numbers under Fox unless Peyton Manning was throwing the ball (then everyone had good receiving numbers).  Kris Mangum was our top TE for 5 years under Fox and his best year was 300 yards or so.  And then Barnidge went to Cleveland and had Brian Hoyer/Johnny Manziel as his qb.

Sometimes its less about the player than it is about the coach/team/philosophy.

Yeah he did deal with some injuries to be fair. Not to mention John Fox's philosophy in general toward TE's throughout those years.

I liked Barnidge when he was here, I had expectations for him. But I don't think his lack of success here is something you can put too much on either him or the Panthers. He is obviously having a good season right now, but who knows if that will translate to future seasons. Some guys just take longer to put it all together.

Regardless, the lack of development from Barnidge is ultimately a big factor in why we ended up going out, and trading for Greg Olsen. Which is really the best trade the Panthers have ever done considering Olsen's leadership, and what he has accomplished here with us. So I would have to say things worked out well all around.
