you mean in 2012, when he'd just been the panthers qb coach for a season, wasn't the Panthers OC, and was never interviewed?

Is that when you mean?

In 2007 when they were a dumpster fire and he interviewed with them twice and still couldn't get the job despite Don begging the team to take him.

Anyone know the communication of the plays? Is it Shula directly to Cam or Shula to Dorsey to Cam?

Knowing what Ron believes about consistency (based on what he did in keeping Shula to being with) I think if Shula takes another opportunity, that we would see Dorsey being promoted. They have a good relationship it seems and Dorsey knows the tendency and nuances of this offense, as constructed. Who knows what Ricky Proehl's goals are, but I don't know that I can see him as a coordinator. He seems to really enjoy being a position coach and having that ability to teach WRs.  For some people, that's more important than the title and responsibility of being an OC.

Will make for good talk on February 8th though.

Shula has stated he won't take a college job. He wants to stay in the NFL. Per one of their beat writers, he's reportedly  communicated specifically to the Miami Hurricanes that he's not interested in that position.

As to assistants, contract status matters. Teams don't have to promote assistants to keep them if they're under contract.  They can simply deny permission (like the Chargers did with Steve Wilks when we wanted him). If they're not locked up, then teams can try to keep them with a better offer if they so desire.

If the Panthers do need to hire a new OC, neither Proehl nor Dorsey has been coaching long enough that I'd want to consider them. If we went in house, Jim Skipper's done the job before. So has Pete Hoener, but only at the college level. Given the choices overall, I'd prefer an outside hire, honestly.

I could see Ken Whisenhunt being an option (different system but not as big an adjustment as a WCO guy) if he's still unemployed. Also like Bengals QB Coach Ken Zampese (same system) if he's available. Also possible Mike McCoy is free. I know some might suggest Pep Hamilton but I'm really not interested in him.

Plus there'll be other guys available, likely anyone on the Colts and Titans staffs.  Coaches from the Saints, Chargers, Dolphins and Lions staffs are also potential options depending on what happens there.

I'm with Scot on this one.

I would think that Wiz would be the first call, or McCoy if the Chargers go another route...not expecting that though.  With those injuries, he probably bought himself another year.

Personally, I don' think that Shula leaves this year, especially if we make a deep playoff run.

Heck, you could probably get Cam Cameron if you wanted him. He might want another shot in the NFL.

Hadn't heard that about Shula but that is very good news. I have no problem if he takes a head job somewhere but him going to college would be a major distraction since he would need to be hired in January to get some time in recruiting so even if he stayed on until the end he would still have a lot of stuff to do for recruiting.

I believe that teams can only deny permission for teams to interview assistants if it is considered a lateral move. I know for a fact that teams can't deny permission for a coordinator to interview for a head coach position and I'm like 90% sure that teams can't deny an interview request for a position coach to interview for a coordinator job. I think the Colts got around that by making Chud the associate head coach or something so another team couldn't interview for an OC job.

Wilks would have been a promotion (DB coach to DC) when the Chargers declined to let us interview him.

Some teams have a policy of allowing guys to seek advancement. Unknown how the Panthers feel but I'm pretty sure they've denied interviews before.
