“He’s being way more vocal,” Panthers defensive end Kony Ealy told co-host Gil Brandt and me on SiriusXM NFL Radio. “He’s doing what the Kobe Bryants and Michael Jordans are doing — that’s knowing how to challenge the player. Not challenging to throw them down but bring them up.

“I love it.”

...... Newton dedicated himself to further mastering Carolina’s offense. Newton is at the point where he chooses the play based upon the defensive look he’s getting. This should lead to a faster-paced attack.

“That’s where you see him at his best,” Rivera said. “In all honesty, we say he’s playing Madden. He’s seeing what’s going on and then — bam! — he’s clicking buttons and making his calls and adjustments and reads.

“When he practices poorly is when we slow the tempo down and get into the huddle. He likes the frenetic energy. To me, that’s where he’s confident. He wants to go. He doesn’t want to slow down. You’ll see a lot of our up-tempo offense I think throughout the year and I think you’ll really get a good chance to get a sense for his development and growth.”

Good read.  I am glad to see that [it seems] the Panthers will be going more no huddle...Cam really gets into a rhythm with the no huddle and has gotten pretty darn good at reading defenses and selecting the right play.  This offense might just be something really special.

Also speaks to the value of continuity within a system.

I know people want to fire the OC on an annual basis (even last year when we had the number one offense) but there's something to be said for keeping your star quarterback in an offensive attack that he knows well, and likes.

Hopefully they stop going to a ball control offense in the second half of games after jumping out to a lead this season.  I'm pretty sure that's what's been stalling the offense and allowing others teams to come back last season.  Luckily they managed to pull them out but my nerves would appreciate it if they would cut that out.

Does this mean that maybe we won't be running the play clock to zero before snapping the ball 90% of the time putting even more pressure on our mediocre OTs by giving the snap away? That'd be nice.

Defensive linemen can't see the play clock when in their stances.

Unless they turn the clock off at the end zone behind the quarterback (entirely possible), the defense can see it. I've no idea though if they only run the clock facing the QB.

This is exactly what I kept saying would happen if we kept the same system and allowed Cam to master the system instead of changing systems and doing an Alex Smith on him.

It is really gratifying to see this offense grow and thrive under Shula and his coaches. They have really developed the perfect system to maximize Cams talents.  I could see Cam having another MVP year.

The leap Cam made last season in his play and understanding of our offense and opposing defenses was obvious to everyone. If he's made yet another leap, then we might have the best QB in the NFL second only to future HOF QB Tom Brady. Add to that the return of KB, and maturation of Funchess, and our offense could be the best the Panthers franchise has ever fielded. If ever Kalil were going to make a SB prediction in the paper... on second thought scratch that.

    • Over previous years? Sure is 😆
    • An odd little vibe I've noticed here of late: some folks are "all or nothing" to an absolutely extreme level when it comes to Bryce. Here's a bit of truth telling though: There are, in fact, things Bryce does well. Likewise, there are areas in which he's improved over his time here. He has, on several occasions now, legitimately helped us win games. On the flipside, there have been failures in other areas as well as coaching that we're not in any way his fault.  And finally , it is also genuinely possible that the team may see him as the future, even if we don't. The craziest part, though? It's actually possible that they're right and we're wrong. All of this is true, and more, yet if you accept any of these premises people go from zero to apesh-t in under three seconds 😳 Anything less than total disavowal of Bryce and / or agreement that he's the worst QB of all time and suddenly you're a "stan". Oy 🙄 The reality though?  Bryce is indeed an NFL quarterback. Not a great one, probably backup level good, and I've seen way worse. Now, if you run that statement through your personal Google translator and it comes back with some version of "I want to throw 50 million a year at Bryce for the next 10 years", that's not really my issue it's yours  I don't wanna make him the franchise quarterback, but it's not my call. Win or lose, the team is going to do what they think is best. And as always, if it disagrees with what I think we should do, I'm gonna hope I'm the one who's wrong. Internet clout means nothing. Watching my favorite team win at my favorite sport meas fun 😁
