Bye Week Bordem - Jonathan Stewart's Value

Sitting at 1-5 at the bye week has me questioning if the Panthers should be in buy or sell mode leading up to the November 1st trade deadline. We have seen the national writers and fans say the Panthers should go out and get Joe Thomas or Joe Haden, but their hasn't been much talk about the Panthers being sellers.

I've seen a few Huddlers suggest that given Stewart's injury history, that he could be post June-1 cut after this year to save some cap space. If this were to happen, the Panthers would add about  $3.5M in dead money for 2017-2018 and free up about $6.25M in cap space in 2017 and $1M in 2017.

But what if a team like the Packers or another RB needy team come calling, looking for an upgrade at RB? Trading Stewart now (I'm not taking into effect this year's dead money or cap savings) would add about $5M to dead money for 2017-2018 and free up about $4.75M in 2017 and $1M in 2018.

With all of that said, looking at the figures, what would you consider Stewart's return value in a trade scenario? Would a 3rd round pick be sufficient enough for the difference of the $1.5M in dead money/cap savings in trading his vs cutting him? What would a realistic return be? Does the staff have that much confidence in CAP to pull the trigger?

I don't think the Panthers have enough trust in CAP to trade Stewart.  I think we will see a RB drafted in the first 3 rounds in the 2017 draft.  

But...If the Panthers continue to lose, I would like to see them get something out of Stewart because more than likely they are going to cut him due to cap reasons next year....I would take a 3rd rounder for him if I were making the decisions.  He will only continue to have injury issues as he gets older and he will be the 'dreaded 30' next year.  I think his best days are behind him.

Stewart would fit right in with that Offense. Hey, if they are willing to give us something worthy of actually looking at? Why not?

 

That said. Stewy has a history of missing games. Not sure any team would be willing to give us anything worth-while in a trade.

 

And...trading Stewy might send the wrong signal. I am sure we are still interested in winning. Trading Stewy would undermine that philosophy.

Not to be "That guy", ah hellz, who am I kidding? I like being "That guy". But, we only have one more game until the trade deadline. Not sure how much more losing we can do in that time frame.

 

If some team was goofy enough to give us a 3rd? I'd take it. Let Cap, and Fozzy, get real good looks the rest of this year. Gives us a real opportunity to evaluate them. Bring in a real FB, run the Power I out of Pro Sets, and let's see what we have.

 

But realistically? We need Stewy in this Offense. So if you are going to trade him, you had better have a plan on replacing him.

I'm going to say.... if we got a 7th for him we would be the winners. He has been hurt since college and even though he is effective when healthy, he can't stay healthy. He Is the Romo of the RB world. Love the guy to death, but we need more reliability.

      Defensive Tackle: The Need that Shall Not be Named

      Defensive tackle (or end in a 3-4 base) is suddenly a rather significant need.  It seems to be a forbidden topic on the Huddle.  Well I am going to unforbidden it for this thread. When we lost Robinson, it was a salary cap cutting move, saving us about $9m or so, I think.  That suggests that we are going to get cheaper, younger, and maybe, more multi-dimensional.  First, what did we lose in Robinson: (Charlotte Observer)  "Robinson co-led the team in sacks (5.5) in 2024, and he ranked second among Carolina linemen, behind Brown, in sacks (2.5) in 2025. (Derrick) Brown played on 76.4% of the Panthers’ defensive snaps last year, while Robinson played on 62.2% of those reps. No other defensive lineman played more than 38.3%, as free-agent addition, Turk Wharton, dealt with injuries throughout his first season in Carolina. Wharton played in just nine games, producing 36 total tackles and two sacks. He’s guaranteed $14 million this upcoming season. Read more at: https://www.charlotteobserver.com/sports/nfl/carolina-panthers/article314544998.html#storylink=cpy OK, about Turk Wharton.  The Observer claims that he and Bobby Brown III were to rotate into the Robinson DE position, but that is too weird for my head to comprehend.  First, Brown III is a NT by trade and Wharton weighs about 280 lbs and is not stout vs. the run.  Brown III is not going to provide the internal pass pressure; he is basically designed to take on double teams and dig in.  Wharton, on the other hand, had a PFF score in those 9 games of 40 or so.  In fairness, he was playing with injuries, but Damn.  PFF gives me a higher rating at the Golden Corral buffet.  In other words, we need a true DT who can fill the two thirds of snaps that we just released.  We can't count on Turk and Brown III is not the answer.  Cam Jackson?  Same as Brown.  Have your people do what they do best.  Furthermore, Derrick Brown probably should limit his snaps.  Playing more than 3/4 of the snaps is hard on the body.  A tired player in the trenches is more prone to lower-body injuries. We need a player who can give Derrick Brown some relief and play opposite him as well.  Turk can rotate in but he needs to shoot gaps and give Guards and tackles fits--a change of pace.   I have to think we are going to draft DT much sooner than most Huddlers realize.  My favorite, you didn't ask? Probable second-rounder Gracen Halton (No. 59 overall, according to ESPN's March 2026 update). Once considered a Day 3 sleeper, his 2026 NFL draft stock has exploded into Round 2 or 3 due to elite interior pass-rush metrics.  Projected Round: 2 (Early to Mid) Key Traits: Elite explosive, quickness, 12.2%+ pass-rush win rate, and positional versatility to play inside on passing downs. Combine Highlights: Led defensive tackles in the vertical jump (36.5”) and broad jump, per Sports Illustrated. Draft Stock: Rising fast due to consistent 2025 production (7 tackles for loss) and a "freak show" combine performance, according to Stormin in Norman.  Halton is considered a high-motor playmaker and a potential Day 2 standout, notes   I would not be surprised to see DT on day 2.

      I’m old enough to remember when I wanted to draft Njoku We brought back Mitchell and officially kept Tremble. Mitchell Evans isn’t going anywhere. Sanders who knows, he was awful last year I fully agree we need a better TE. This room is awful Njoku would be a massive help in the red zone. However it really seems like Dan and the FO prefer to go young on offense

      You’re underselling Loveland imo. He’s so damn good. You can line him out wide and count on him to win 1 v 1. I don’t see that from Sadiq. Loveland is going to go over 1000 yards next season I’m not overly asking for a WR3. It’s just one of the few directions Morgan could go in round 1.  Let’s say Thieneman, Fano and Cooper are all on the board it’s a tough decision. I just don’t see how this team would take Sadiq over some of those guys given the way they run their offense. Our tight end room is easily bottom of the league so I can definitely see why someone would want a tight end though. At one point during the season I was on the Sadiq train as well. I just don’t think value wise for us specifically it makes sense given our team as a whole As far as tight ends go in this draft I really like Max Klare. Very smooth mover
