I don't know enough to know why they're not high on him, but yeah what you're saying makes sense to me. I think LJ is better than our current backups on the outside (just overall skill-wise) and he's definitely better than Sanchez in the slot. Keeping him on the roster seems like it would improve the overall talent at the CB position and then they would have to figure out the lineups and how to move them around (assuming Cap comes back). 

Edit: But I think there is some validity in their interest in Cap based on their current solutions at slot/Nickel.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but he wouldn't be brought in to cover those receivers. Just the shifty ones in the slot.

He would be brought in to play Nickel here I would imagine. I'm not an expert on D formations, but I'm pretty sure the Panthers play a good bit of Nickel.

They did under McDermott.

Will they continue to do so under Wilks? Unknown.

Leonard Johnson brought a spark to be sure, but the real reason they may not be high on him is this:

I think there's some truth to this. I remember Rivera mentioning Captain in a press conference earlier this season actually. Said something about "The things we used to do with old 41, Captain".

Can't imagine it'll change much at all under Wilks. Of course we'd love to get Shaq on the field more but when so many teams run base 3 wide sets you can't really have 3 LBs on the field, no matter how good they are in coverage. You're not putting a LB on a shifty slot WR and expecting good things to happen.
