SBNation has us trading up to #5

by no reasonable standard can you bank on obtaining a pro bowler in the 3rd. At #72 you can fairly expect "decent starter."

Trai Turner was picked at 92, and has been to the pro bowl the last 2 years! he may be more of the exception than the rule, but there is a crap load of talent at #72. I would love to get 3-4 "decent starters" out of this draft. There's a whole lot that has to go wrong for us NOT to get elite talent (at one position or the other) at 8. If Fournette is gone, someone else will be there. We need starters at slot receiver, DE, SS, CB, TE, another DE. I'm not including LT because I don't think there's elite talent (future probowler) in this year's draft.

Or we could just tag KK and trade him to one of the teams ahead of us and get Fournette and Adams and hope Butler can replace KK as soon as this year. Not gonna happen obviously but I would freaking love this. KK will likely not get his huge deal here so it's a rental for a year or two depending on how we want to play it out. And that could be fine but if we could get both Adams and Fournette this year in exchange for that rental it'd be insanely worth it to me. Even if Butler doesn't turn out to be as good as KK.

Wow this would actually be a heck of a deal if they could pull it off. Short is also older than most coming off his rookie contract (28), so I would be pumped if we ended up with Adams/Hooker and Fournette.

I would leapfrog the Jags, because they're going to take either Adams or Fournette who are the two guys we're eyeing. If we want a specific one of those two players, we might want to get in front of them to not risk it.

I'm really starting to think the Jags are going to continue their trend of making laughable selections in the first round by picking Dalvin Cook, known and loved already in the state of Florida.

Another scenario that may play out like a game of chicken is staying put, and, KNOWING the Jets need additional picks (they only have 6 total and are in a world of hurt everywhere), getting on the phone with them if they take him and take their second choice at #8 for them and then giving them the 3rd as well.

When you look at their history and the state of that franchise, I have little doubt that will play a key role in their decision.  Ironically staying in Florida is the worst thing for him, closer to his goons.

What OP is essentially advocating for is a LESS drastic Julio Jones trade, which at the time, people thought the Falcons were crazy, but it's panned out.

The point is if there is a blue chipper at five that won't be there at 8 you spend a third getting him. We have an extra third this year anyway.

God I love the draft.

I have not looked into Gettleman's past draft history, but he seems to be rather conservative. If he moves up to 5 I'll fall of my couch. Gettleman is getting way up there in age and doesn't appear healthy, so he's probably very close to retirement. I think he wants to play it safe, stay put in the draft, and look for a bargain here or there in FA. Nothing big.

Fournette is one of the most over-hype players in this year draft.I also don't think he will be a good fit for the Panthers.   Fournette struggles to create on his on. He needs a good FB and blockers to have any type of success in the NFL.he is very scheme specific. When you watch tape of him slow down the film see the play develop and often times he doesn't hit the correct hole or make defenders miss at the line of scrimmage or his inability to make jump cuts or move laterally would stop him for making plays. He would just fellow his FB and make reads off of his FB. He has average to below-average lateral ability, jump cut ability and cut back ability.   Fournette would struggle running out of the shotgun formation and Cam passes mostly from the shotgun formation that's why i don't think he would be a good fit for us. The best RB we can get in the draft that fit us would be Kareem Hunt and would only cost the Panthers a 3rd round pick

Getty had an off year last year, am pretty sure he's determined to erase those memories and get a "franchise" guy this year. Will be interesting to see what he does leading up to the draft.

I have an inkling that he's been around the league long enough to know the patterns that keep occuring ..  I feel like he new the limitations of our roster and coaches and was planning for a regression after losing a super bowl.. i think we will be reloaded in 2017
