Walter Football 2018 Mock Draft (Panthers)

They've mocked the first 4 rounds... with Carolina having 2 3rd round picks and no 4th.  Thoughts?  I haven't heard of 3 of these guys.

Round 1 (24): Austin Bryant, DE, Clemson

"Julius Peppers and Charles Johnson aren't going to be around for much longer. Mario Addison is the only significant edge rusher on the roster right now that Carolina will have in the a couple of years, so the Panthers could go after a defensive end in the 2018 NFL Draft."

Round 2 (56): Sam Beal, CB, Western Michigan

"The secondary is the weak link of Carolina's roster. The Panthers need upgrades at both cornerback and safety."

Round 3 (83): Simmie Cobbs Jr., WR, Indiana (6'4" 220lbs)

"The Panthers will need another receiver to go along with Devin Funchess and Curtis Samuel in the wake of the Kelvin Benjamin trade."

Round 3 (88): Jaylen Dunlap, CB, Illinois

"Here's more help for Carolina's secondary, which has seen some shaky play from its cornerbacks.

Would rather go with Clelin Ferrell if we draft a DE in the first but he probably wont make it to us and we really need a WR early. Probably ought to draft a RB in the first few rounds because this is a very good RB class this year. Sony Michel, Nick Chubb, Josh Adams, Royce Freeman, Damien Harris in the 2nd should give us a big play maker we haven't had in a while. Once the senior bowl and the combine rolls around it will be easier to tell which guys are separating themselves from the rest of the pack.

I do agree with them though that DE is arguably our biggest draft need based on our current roster and our defensive philosophy.

I'd rather add a proven vet at WR. We've been trying to throw draft picks at this problem forever. We have a legit starter in Funchess, a promising developmental prospect in Samuel, and another good development 4th option in Byrd. We need a legit starter with speed to pair with Funchess.

I think what you, Walter Football, and I guess everyone else is forgetting is that the new owner will care more about the Panthers than the shield...and sign Greg Hardy.

    • IDK how we go from good player for good player trade suggestions to dumpster fire bust for dumpster fire bust trade suggestions. Even though Coleman is better, he has a littany of motivation and discipline issues. Do we think milquetoast Dave is gonna fix that??
    • I am not worried about the contracts because any/all can be jettisoned in 2027 with minimal ramifications. I would like to land him because you rarely ever see an elite, 25 year old center hit free agency, this is a very weak center class and Mays is a bottom quarter starting center(love him as a utility IOL).  Ideally this offseason we solve center and draft a high caliber RT/LT to fill the gap for Ikey. Then next offseason, pending outcome of the rookie and Ikey's recovery you can jettison Hunt(VASTLY overpaid), make a determination on Ikey's ability to play(perhaps extend him on the franchise tag as a "prove it"), and let the Ikey/rookien situation dictate Moton. He can be extended on a LOWER cost deal or jettisoned if Ikey and the rookie can take the reigns. Either way, both OT's will need to be resolved, we need an actually starting caliber NFL center again and we need to get rid of one of these OG's. Hunt is the obvious choice as Lewis is substantially better across the board and cheaper.
    • That's not a thing. If they can't find someone, they either aren't actually trying or it's a poisonous job and no one will.  Yes, plenty of them have gone with whom they wanted already. That's not really the point of the rule. It's to force teams to provide opportunities. It has worked well because coaches that wouldn't normally be given interviews are given that experience and teams have also been impressed enough to either offer them in the future or pass positive comments along to other NFL owners/front office personnel.  Also, we are over 20 years into the Rooney Rule. This isn't some new thing teams have to navigate.
