Ha! I remember what people were saying.  Some even had Byrd ahead of Funchess.

You initially asked why people see Samuel ahead of Byrd.  I've given you reasons why.

Yeah your reasons are wrong.lol

Samuel wasn't making the type of impact Byrd was in terms of game changing plays. Byrd was making plays on Special teams and in the offense. The film tells me all I need to know about who shown more potential last year.

Saying that it is close, Samuel had his moments as well, just not as much as Byrd did.

Samuel was the difference between our first bout against Atlanta and making their defense run circles and our second bout. He adds so much to our offense.

Labeling him injury prone is also stupid since his injuries are luck based and he simply had a lot of bad luck this year. Prior to the NFL, he was near spotless with his injury history, so it’s just dumb all around.

Put Samuel in more and this offense will flourish. As long as he doesn’t contract Ginn hands, he’s a sure fire stud already. Gets open easily and with more chances, he’s sure to be fine.

Again, it is not dumb to state fact

on his hands, every time the ball came to him I expect a drop or a ricochet more then a catch   Can he learn to do what natural receivers do at this level, who knows

His injury history in college does not matter now  very different level of competition and length of season

how many NFL  preseason and regular season games did Samuel miss last year?

Given the severity of that ankle injury, it may very well mean more lost time this year and lost speed

the sidelines of promising NFL players who could not withstand the injuries is  full

The Panthers need him to produce, week end and week out, When and if that happens is the issue   I hope it does but the window on this team may not support the timing.

Moncrief could absolutely be the steal of free agency this year. His size,  speed and smoothness in his routes are still evident if not muted. Don't get it twisted, questionable QB play and an untimely collarbone injury really stunted his development. He is still young and talented.  I don't see a big problem with a high-reward-low-risk player like Crief.

As for Bryant,  I said in another thread that I don't know how some of you get around the fact that this team is still Jerry Richardson's.  As such,  the man has said that his goal is to model his club after the Steelers. That being said,  if they're trying to jettison the much-troubled receiver, I just don't see J-Rich allowing that to happen.

Luck is a good QB who throws a ton and Moncrief has only had one season with over 400 yards receiving. I liked Moncrief coming out of Ole Miss but he hasn’t showed much

Bryant in the other hand has been explosive since the get go while being on a short leash. And we have to change this mindset of only going after choir boys, Richardson is gone,

LOL!

I believe they saying he has shown more potential then any other WR on the current rostor besides funchess last season. I also see the potential. At the beginnig of the season he was used for blocking assignments, then Ron said he was going to use Byrd more in the game plan to open the field some. He did but in that game, which was the Patriots game, Byrd got injured. That gave Samuel more of an opportunity. Then Samuel went down and KB got traded. Giving others opportunity but non showed up besides Funchess. Byrd came back the Greenbay game and gave the team a spark that was missing with two touchdowns. Then had key 3rd down plays that kept the drives going vs the vikings. Would have had a hell of a game vs the saints if Cam was on target. Also was starting to have a good game vs the bucs before getting injured.

Your blind if you cant see the potential in Byrd or your just hoping for another player to be better. Im want both Samuel and Byrd to be used correctly because that will benefit the team. Two is better then one.

Also Byrd has some of the best hands on the team. He has caught almost every catchable ball thrown his way.

How much longer will we be talking about how the FO needs to improve the WR core... with the exception of Smitty and Moose this team has basically had a bunch of cast-offs it’s entire existence.

As long as our front office continues to act like a good chunk of our fanbase and think that bottom of the roster type WRs are the answer.

I think ppl are over thinking this now.. There is some meat on the bone in FA WR this year and some deals to be had if you look..  After the top targets are off the market.. You have guys like Moncerrif, Matthew's, Wallace, Jaron and John Brown, Richardson, Wright, and Lee who can come in day 1 competing for starting snaps..

8 to 10 mil can get you 2 guys in FA.. 5 to 6mil can get you Wallace or Richardson.. 3 to 4mil can get you a Brown, Moncerif or Wright.. We can come out with 2 FA WR if worked right... Byrd and Samuels are pretty much your rookies.. With the injuries and little playing time they pretty much are going into a type of rookie season.. We really don't need another development project...

Agree with Igo’s Op, but not sure if that’ll be the order. I really hope we add 2 quality WRs this offseason though. Crabtree if he becomes available would be perfect to pair with a young wr in the draft. Go S first round in this scenario (Derwin James if he somehow falls would be great) then grab a wr like arden Tate round 2. Alternatively, if we signed a big name like Watkins or Allen Robison, then I could see us drafting a wr round 4 or 5 too. Finally, we could could sign a low tier wr ( Richardson, Pryor? Idk just some names I don’t think will command a lot of money) and draft a wr round 1 like kirk or Ridley. Wr is the team’s biggest need rn though with how injury proned some guys appear to be rn. We can’t let Cam play with funchess and practice sqauders again, we just can’t

Not sure if you are talking about me, but anyone who thinks Shepard and Clay are better than Byrd in any way are insane. Byrd was barely healthy last year, but looked way better than either of them in just the few games he played. I wouldn't say he's a star or that he's got a higher ceiling than Samuel, but the post I just replied to might be the first one where any Panthers fan has had anything good to say about Clay and Shepard as WRs. They were terrible last year and Clay in particular cost us in the playoffs. I'd take Samuel and Byrd all day behind Funchess. I'd like to add more, but there's not a single other WR on our team last year that I'd want to count on this year. Samuel and Byrd need health, but they showed that they could get open and actually catch the ball. Honestly, as far as hands go, Byrd was a bit better than Samuel. Samuel ended his season due to a drop.

I think that the hit may have had something to do with the drop.

I don't think anyone thinks he is a star.  But he showed enough promise to get a good shot at the 4th or 5th receiver spot.  In reality, he has shown more than any receiver currently on the roster other than Funchess.  Which is why I hope we get another receiver in free agency.  We need someone who knows what he is doing to combine with funchess while we give Byrd and Samuel a chance to show what they can do.  Well, mainly to show that they can say on the field enough to make them worth a roster spot.

Agreed that Byrd is fine as a 4th or 5th WR. We gotta hope that Samuel can be a legit slot receiver and that we acquire another legit starter this offseason.

I actually think we're not THAT far off as a whole. Another legit starter and a little luck with injuries and I think we have a chance to have a pretty decent WR corps.
