G Jeremiah Sirles signs one-year contract

If Hurney keeps up this ability to bargain bin hunt for depth and pay reasonable rates for big players I may just have to start liking him!! He is a LOT more like Gettleman now than he was but seems like hes willing to pay for big player here and there when we have need, which Gettles got rather obstinate and stingy about at times. I will gladly eat my crow if Hurney has metamorphosed into a legit GM.

For what it's worth from his 2014 Combine Profile - http://www.nfl.com/draft/2014/profiles/jeremiah-sirles?id=2543827

ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS

Has a big body with very long arms. Good football aptitude. Has played both sides. Three-year starter. Solid personal and football character. Good soldier who works hard and takes to coaching.

WEAKNESSES

Limited hip snap and explosion. Average foot athlete. Stiff movement. Bends at the waist, gets his weight over his toes and falls off blocks. Struggles to shadow counters. Does not consistently generate movement in the run game.

DRAFT PROJECTION

 Round 7-Priority free agent

BOTTOM LINE

Big, scrappy, experienced, long-armed lineman who was miscast at left tackle in college. Lacks core strength to shift inside and could struggle to be more than just a guy.

Just got done reading up on him. Can play all 5 positions on the line. Looks like he’s more of a solid depth guy than a starter.

I’m really starting to think Guard could be the pick at 24 now.

If Quenton Nelson, Will Hernandez, or Isiah Wynn are available at 24, snap'em up.

Especially Wynn who could play any damn position across the line, even as a replacement for Older Brother Kalil if you wanted him to be.

    • Gustavsson would be insane. I think we would have to break the bank to afford that move. Which, I don't think is necessarily a bad idea. Ultimately, Freddie isn't likely to be around more than a couple of seasons more. We can all agree that unless they have a fleet of sports psychologists working on Kochetkov, he will never be capable of getting his head on straight enough to compete.
    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
