Report: Panthers Are Drafting A Defensive Back In The First

Safety please.

I actually think the corner position is already better than last year.

I agree.  If you take Bradberry's 2016 stats and look at Cockrell's 2017 stats, you can see how well they play in the zone scheme.  Wilks took them away from their strengths with the blitz philosophy.

With Gunter (a good zone CB) and Seymour (a young CB with potential) and Corn and Capt, is CB really a need?  Can you improve your CB play by getting more out of the front 4?  Yes.  So make everyone better and find a guy who can get to the passer--a DE, preferably, but not necessarily.

If i were GM, I would draft DE and S, even if the DE pool is not good.  The rest of the draft would be offensive.

My mind changes, but if you can find a DE that can rotate in with Hall, Horton, and Addison, you can save Peppers for his 20 snaps of pass rushing.  The future matters, and Hall is a question mark.  You do not want to pay DEs in free agency and you do not want rookies starting.

Bill Voth just said it's unlikely on his Grill Bill. I trust him 1000 times more than this guy.

We don't draft Safety's in the first at all and barely CB there for that matter.

Not sure how many times that needs to be said for it to sink in. Check out Rivera's S players/picks his entire coaching career and something should sink in if you have any sort of brain material for something to sink into. Also has to do with philosophy/scheme.

I think it would only happen during a trade back but of the two CB is more likely for the first round.

so which would benefit us more...a rookie CB or a rookie Safety ?

Probably Safety, but which is more likely to be better value at 24? Probably CB

I'm not convinced that the safety we would get at 24 will be rated that much higher than the one we can get at 55, whereas the drop off for CB is probably higher.

The problem with CB is we just signed one in free agency and our other one we used a high pick on and played very well his rookie year. Was last year a trend or an exception?  Coaches have to decide that.  IF you are comfortable with your outside CBs are you going to spend a first on a slot or backup?

CB is still a big need imo. We just need our CB’s to make plays on the ball which last season is something they struggled to do overall. What happens if we have injuries at CB in training camp or the regular season? Who replaces Bradberry? Are we sure Ross Cockrell can cover Julio, Mike Evans, and Michael Thomas? I’m not sure about that. I like the depth with Gunter, Seymour, and Cockrell but I don’t know if I want to depend on them for a 16 game season if something happens. CB should definitely be in play at 24. Captain also had a horrible season last year too.

Better than last year? We fielded arguably the worst secondary in the league last year. That’s a mighty low bar to clear.

I think you're both right. Seymour was already taking starts away from Worley, and I think Cockrell will rotate in when we're in zone coverage and do very well in that role. BUT... a legit starter would be damned nice to get.

La canfora is always throwing poo hoping it'll stick. Back when Peyton was a free agent he reported that he was going to sign with Miami and was watching him throw balls to the receivers on the practice field as he speaks. Only to have Peyton be in Denver sign a contract like an hour later.

Voth thinks CB is the most likely pick at 24 and if you look at the history of the 24th pick for the last few years it has very frequently been a CB accross the league. He doesn't see a safety here because there's not enough value for our scheme.

    • While I'd love to add him, it just doesn't make sense for where we are at in our re-build right now. The only teams who should be interested are those who have a very legitimate shot at winning the SB this season, as any team who makes the trade is going to be mortgaging their future to make the move. Teams who make these kinds of trades and then give them the massive contract, in the hopes that it will expedite their path to contention, ALWAYS ends up backfiring because they have to give up the 1st round picks that are then needed to help build out the rest of the roster after eating up such a significant chunk of the cap on the new contract. There is no way the Cowboys trade him for anything less than 2 future 1st rounders (and probably more), plus we'll have to make him the highest paid non QB in league history.  Not to mention that it would then have made the Scourton and/or Princely picks a bit of a waste, as those 2nd and 3rd round picks would have been better off used on a ILB or DB
    • Like his approach to pre season that's ro get them out there and play together for a few plays and right about the night before and morning before.  Maybe we can come out the gate on fire I can smell the smoke from here!!   Go Panthers
    • Only 26 years old, fills the biggest hole on our roster. Top 3 at his respective position, yeah fug it how often does a future HOF player become available in their prime?
