Norv Turner's play design

Can he design a play without a Left Tackle? I feel like this offense will go nowhere with Matt Kalil.

I don’t think this team could be much better equipped to. Two solid TEs, a tall WR, a slot WR, a YAC specialist, two gadget players. Everyone save Smith is built for short plays and I’m sure this was intentional.

Remember, multiple teams didnt want norv because his play calls were meh... I dont say that because hes bad, but just to point out how low we had set the bar with Mike Shula at the helm.  In fact, I think he'll have a resurgence due to never having someone as dynamic as cam newton and CMC is looking like the real deal, but remembering him being moved on from can remind us of how bad shula was.

We've had a Ferrari for years, but it was always in park.  Even if we're just taking it for a drive to the store, it's going to look a helluva lot better.  Norv doesn't even have to be a mad scientist genius play-caller...but a little better than Shula and we win A LOT of games over the last few years.

I was thinking pretty much this exact same thing.

I wonder if Ron's regretting sticking with Shula for so long?  IIRC it was a close shave about keeping Shula again this year.  One day Ron basically said he didn't anticipate any coaching shake up, then the next day he announced Shula was gone, saying he'd been thinking about it and at 2 in the morning (or something like that) he made the decision.

So far it's looking like a great move.

Let's get us a 'ship!carolina

Maybe the 2am thing was when Norv called and said he would take the job.

I see you haven't been around here very long, so you have a perfectly valid excuse not to have known this.

But the answer to your question is, yes, at the very least they existED.  Now whether they'll every bring up their formerly proud defense of Shula's "brilliant schemes" is another question.  They'll likely let sleeping dogs lie in that regard.

Dude has a SB MVP (yeh, I know) and “ the next great rb” in  Barkley in NY. When he screws that up his supporters will finally vanish forever

I don't think he's gonna get the opportunity to tinker at all with that offense.  HC designs the offense and calls the plays up there.  He'll get the honor of "coaching" Eli Manning is about all, lol.

Shula *might* (maybe) be allowed a little input into the run-game design.  But if I were Pat Shurmur, I'd just give Shula some NFL blocks and Legos, lock him in his office, and not let him out.

One thing I noticed about the pass designs last night was that there was a constant outlet/dumpoff available for Cam on every play. Instead of keeping the extra blocker back, Turner cuts one loose to be the safety valve, something Shula hardly ever seemed to scheme up.

Hell, on Cam's interception, he forced it downfield when CMC was wide open underneath as a safety valve that Cam just missed, probably not used to having the option available on that particular play.

Two thoughts. Let's see how we do this week when both teams are game planning. Looking good against vanilla defenses doesn't guarantee we will look good once teams are game planning against us.

I hope our offense has some tricks up their sleeves. So far  the play alling has been vanilla as well.  That CMC TD was a play we have run for years. The difference was execution by Mahon and Armah and a bulked up CMC who broke a tackle. Truth is I have not seen any special play calling yet. What Norv and Scott get credit for is correcting some of Cam's bad habits  and getting the ball out quicker. Or at least this is the first time Cam has talked about his mistakes openly like missing a wide open Smith in the flat on one of the sacks.

Good riddance to both of them.  Fortunately JR lost his poo and it lead to a more aggressive GM, major OC upgrade, and new owner. win, win, win

Aggressive is an interesting way to describe hurney.
