What do we do with Williams/Moton?

I wanted to take a break from the mumbo jumbo of last weeks game to see what the fan base is interested in doing with Daryl Williams and Taylor Moton.

First, as bad as Kalil’s contract is, Gettleman somewhat rectified that by drafting two great tackles in Williams and Moton. I was never a huge DG fan but he struck gold on these picks.

NOW...

For whatever reason Daryl didn’t get as much press as Earl Thomas, but let’s not forget that Daryl was the first big name player of the season in a contract year to go down

However, in his place, Moton has been a absolutely dominant grading out as an elite right tackle and a solid left tackle.

The two issues the Panthers may have is 1) Salary Cap Space and 2) Where do Williams and Moton fit. The Panthers have 27 players hitting free agency this year and a lot of them are starters that will need to be replaced or re-signed.

With that said...

Should the Panthers try to re-sign Williams with the hope that he or Moton can develop into an elite LT or do we let an all-pro tackle walk because of the risk that neither can develop into the LT of the future and that money can be spent better elsewhere?

It all depends on the money. If we get a decent contract for Williams, no reason we can't keep both. Both Kalils will be gone (freeing up a poo-ton of cash) by the time we have to lock down Moton. I just hope that we avoid another Trai/Norwell situation where we have to let one walk to be able to keep the other.

Pay tackles, draft guards.

Personally like what we got. Unless Clarke falls off, extend him, he's earned a spot. Moton remains. Williams can stay if he's cheap, otherwise later, take the Kalil baggage with you.

I think clarke is a solid depth guy at his point in his career. He has done a good job but Williams and moton are young and got room to grow. Clarke is perfect for a reserve role tho.

remember we were in extension talks with Daryl and the two sides were quote "not even close."

Daryl could be set for life already if we had worked out a deal.  Now he'll be negotiating after a season lost to injury.  He'll still get paid.  I'd like to think the injury would bring his price down for us, but with OT being such a need in the NFL, I could see another team giving him big bucks and maybe even trying him at left tackle.

Ideally we put Moton on left and sign Daryl to a fair deal.

^This x100

Pay them both.

As good as both of them are on the right side you can't convince me at least one of them won't be above average on the left and in this league "above average" on the left is worth a good contract.

All things being equal I would want my cap to towards QB, LT, RT, WR1 on offense.

    • Just looked up that he went to Washington. Damn, besides a deep playoff run last year, they are basically the opposite of what the Buffalo Bills are to us. Taking the worst former Panthers
    • Starting to wonder how many people here have been on functioning teams in any capacity whether it be in sports, at work, or in their own home... Like, yea, my supervisor is who I report to but I got on-the-job training from my teammates. I'd go to my boss and get direction when I had questions, but I also went to my teammates first with those questions. Not having the consistency of AT in the locker room is a negative that the team seems to be hoping to offset with the positives that are the increase opportunities for their young WRs. This is also good for Bryce, because it's going to challenge him to elevate + lead those guys, while also bad because he loses his most reliable target from the last two seasons. The move happened. Now we're in "hurry up and wait" mode to see what the results will end up being over the course of the season.
    • Conked out during the 1st quarter of the Cinci game. Seeing Boise State get belt-to-ass + the ECU/NC St (and the 60hr work week I've had) took a lot out of me. I am not ready for the feels I'm going to experience on Saturday during Corso's last show. 😭😭
