Ron Rivera blew all three timeouts on a single point-less drive in a fourth quarter one-score game against a divisional rival

Ron Rivera isn't a bad coach but there's a reason he's got a reputation for being situationally weak. He deserves all the criticism he gets for it.

Thankfully offensive talent bailed him out. I am all for complementary football - we saw it played out yesterday in textbook form - but I fear Ron Rivera's achilles heel is a coaching weakness that can never complement weaknesses in other areas and pick the team up.

Let's hope we're good enough to never rely on it.

against the best offense in the league and a struggling pass rush we absolutely 100% did not have that luxury. one or two plays go differently and we're coming from behind in the two minute warning and we're out of time outs.

poor management from the head coach. we got lucky it didn't burn us.

like i love watching the Falcons and Patriots where at the end of every half they have all three timeouts and just casually drive down the field, controlling the clock and easily getting into field goal range/score a TD.

Meanwhile the Panthers are without timeouts midway through the third because Ron wanted to challenge the spot on a 2 yard run on 1st and 10.

Ron Rivera is mania type for being such a cool calculated individual imo.

Either he gets too aggressive or he is too conservative.

When he gets burned for being too aggressive, he returns to being passive/reactive Ron. Basically Ron becomes rigid and stuck in his ways.

If he stays aggressive at the beginning of squeelers game then I know he is trying to break his cycle.

He always talking about not letting off the gas, this coming game will prove to me if he can get over his fear of mistakes.

Going from memory here, but 1 TO was lost to a challenge, right? The other 2 were the inability of this team to get in the huddle, call a play and get to the line. And don't forget the 5 yard delay of game penalty when they had no more time outs...

If there's one thing which hampers this offense, it's not having the time to look over the D and change the play because by the time this team is at the line there are like 5-7 seconds left on the play clock. That whole time Cam is giving us his 1st down pose and smiling to the crowd, the play clock is running.

One thing or a couple of things I saw with the Rams and Saints game that stand out--

The Rams get to the line fast for plays ala Chip Kelly,... Sean Payton got his team back in to score before the half and so did the Rams with a quick fieldgoal,..

They dont waste timeouts,.. the Seans use them as a weapon, have teams that play with a sense of urgency when they need to move fast.

Thats the element that is still missing from the Panthers I feel. Not only situational headcoaching-- but having the team READY to play in those situations, namely when the urgency is on the line.

Cam and the defense have shown up late in games and gotten us back in or won at key moments, but many of those key moments were caused by early failures or lack of the situational preparedness I mentioned.

Its an element we really have not had and need.

Things during game day like clock management and timeouts still eludes Ron this many years in, so he's just never going to figure it out.    He's not a bad coach but he's not a good coach.     Ron is an exceptional DC, but he's a mediocre HC.     This is just how it is and we have to roll with it.

    • He didn't actually make the playoffs. We had several opportunities to clinch on our own and crapped the bed. We had to wait for Atlanta to win to get us in. We had the tie breaker in a poo division that had 3 teams finish 8-9.  If you go back and look at the games we played, we weren't a dominant offensive team under him as an OC. We beat the Jets 13-7 and barely beat the packers after they failed to convert multiple red zone trips. We relied heavily on converting 4th downs. DC was also extremely slow at recognizing trends in game and was really lacking with clock management.  Was there progress this year? Yes. But most of it was on the defensive side of the ball. Our offense was stagnant with a couple of exceptions. Any improvement from Bryce was minimal and he kept insisting on XL over Coker, and even RB distribution instead of going with the hot hand.  He may be building something, but I don't think we've seen enough to know what that is. It could go either direction. If he insists on being OC, then without a noticeable improvement, yes he needs to be on the hot seat like any OC would. The more jobs you take on the more you have to be judged on. I think he would have a longer leash if he hired a true OC and just focused in being HC.
    • zero percent suprised Luke is a nice guy irl, have never heard anything differently from anyone that's met him.  I have heard mixed reports on Smitty I know one guy on here got to know Deangelo Williams and J stew pretty well back in the day when they used to host events and he said they were nice iirc  I can't imagine Jordan gross is a bad hang, he's hilarious
