Protecting Cam Newton

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

On WFNZ, Nick Wilson was talking about what Ron Rivera will do regarding Cam Newton in the next four games.

Specifically, Wilson wants to know whether Rivera will "protect Newton from himself" if the shoulder is a risk.

He asserted that if this is the case, and Rivera doesn't sit him down, he should absolutely be fired.

(granted, there are arguments for that already, but hey...)

So the question: Do we believe that Rivera would sit Newton down in order to protect him from further damage to his shoulder?

Rivera is the reason his shoulder is fuged in the first place. Cam has not only carried Rivera's ass his whole tenure, Rivera broke him. Then Rivera has the audacity to throw Cam under the bus after games or bench him over a fuging tie. When we're mathematically out, Cam should be rested, but I don't think Rivera will do that. fug that guy. I'm over him.

I honestly don’t think he would. He is going to continue to ride Cam. In his mind, at least with Cam out there, hurt or not, still gives us the best chance to win.  If Cam is indeed hurt, I wouldn’t mind Tepper stepping in and demanding Cam to be sat down and let our backup get some reps. No need to further damage our franchise QB

No, he will not protect Cam. Keeping Shula, allowing Cam to carry the Offense on his legs for years, lack of adjustments when Cam is getting slammed in a game, waiting to allow Cam to get surgery way past the end of the season....Cam is going to take a brutal beating if someone doesn't step in and sit him this year.

I don't.  I think he'll leave Cam out there until his arm falls off to try to do well enough to save his own (already lost, I hope) job.

Granted I don't know if the shoulder is at risk for a long term injury / significant further damage but if it is and Cam's still playing given our snowball's chance in hell of making anything out of the rest of this season he should be tarred and feathered, not just fired.

No, Rivera will let Cam be the scapegoat - he's already thrown him under the bus after the Detroit game. Rivera will beg Tepper in the offseason to get another quarterback and insist that it's not his fault that Cam is banged up, in an attempt to save his own hide.

Im going to say Ron wants Cam to play whether he’s injured or not, his job depends on it

That's kinda the crux of the issue for me.

If the doctors say his shoulder is fine, no problem.

If the doctors say his shoulder is bad, you sit him.

If the doctors say his shoulder is somewhat okay, but it's risky to keep him out there, you sit him.

Scenario number three is the one that worries me the most. I'm especially worried because Cam is one of those players that won't come out of the game, even if he should.

We already know the answer to this. Ron played Cam with a known turn rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder when we were already eliminated from the playoffs... and he should've been fired for it. I'll never forgive Gettleman or the medical staff for letting it happen either. Someone should've stepped in and put a stop to that insanity.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
